PA2V2 Problems

Thread Starter
I am using my Monster Turbines with my PA2V2 and upon opening the amp I tried it out using the included AC adapter; The sound was good, albeit somewhat warm, although surely a step up on the bass. So, I put in some metal hydride chargeable batteries in my amp, and the sound was weak and more recessed than having my headphones in the iPod alone.
I emailed Gary about my problem who said it might be old batteries, so I tried it with a new pair of AA's (non rechargeable) and the sound had the same recessed quality.
Listening to my amp without batteries delivers a punchy bass, but also comes with an overbearing amount of scratchiness and lack of control. I would love to be able to find a way to keep all the positive qualities of the amp in tact while also losing the scratchiness, not to mention that I'd like to be able to bring it somewhere other than my room at home!

Thanks for hearing me out guys, I assume since this is a popular amp you have some experience and may be able to offer me some help.

you can't use non rechargeable batteries with the PA2V2 because the amp requires that the batteries you use have a specific voltage (1.2V). Theres a slight difference in voltage between standard chargeable (1.2V) and standard non-rechargeable (1.5V) batteries which is causing your problem.

Also you should not use the amp w/o the batteries in the circuit. If you need to get a new set of rechargeables you may wish to look into Sanyo Eneloop, these keep a charge for a very long time.

Powerex AA
The best rechargeable battery I have ever used, with a analytical and balance sound.

I have been using Eneloops in my PA2v2 since the day I got it I can go for days without charging... its wonderful and a requirement as toxic888 stated to use 1.2V batteries.

voltage is not a problem, pa2v2 is using LM4881 amp chip which can handle up to 5.5v... I will be modding my unit to 4.8v to handle high impedence headphone... cheers...

As the previous posters have said, yes, use rechargeable batteries and not just the AC.  The rechargeable Rayovacs (green stripes on the top and bottom) from walmart are reasonably priced, long lasting, and the suggested 1.2v.  I've been using a pair for months with my PA2V2 with no issues.

I am not knowledgeable of the circuit design but I would think it has some voltage regulation.....hence the only problem you should have is with weak batteries.

Analytical and balaced battery? I'm definitely interested.
