Bands who shoulda called it quits after a loss of a member

So in 1969, despite the death of their lead guitarist, The Rolling Stones proved that they could continue rocking....and not only that, but they would go on to release a series of albums which would largely be considered their greatest work. Brian Jones was the founding member of the Rolling Stones and while his role in the band became less "important" as Mick and Keith matured, his death certainly could have been the end of the Rolling Stones. But I think The Stones were the first band to really show that you could be in midst of success and change lineup and still succeed.

Other bands who either lost a key member or members due to death OR had a key member quit or fired are as follows......

AC/DC
The Allman Brothers Band
Black Sabbath
The Doors
Genesis
The Grateful Dead
INXS
Iron Maiden
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Metallica
Pink Floyd
Queen
The Velvet Underground
The Who

and there are soo many others, but these were the ones I could think of right off the back

Which bands, either mentioned above OR that you can think of, do you think would have improved their legacy had they called it quits after the loss of their key member

Well, now that Steven Tyler seems to have left Aerosmith, i believe they should call it quits... I know that Joe Perry said that they will continue without him, but I think that's gonna be a very bad idea...

Van Halen. David Lee Roth was 1/2 the attraction and Sammy Hagar's voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

I think any band that loses a member should reform under a different name.
It comes across as a marketing technique (because people know name <x> and not name <y>). I find this extremely disrepectful, not to mention the band is simply not the band in question without one of their members.

There are other reasons such as "letting their legacy live on" (in the case of death) but I rarely think that is the case.

In cases of members simply leaving I think any band has a right to keep going.

AC/DC and The Who AFTER Entwistle died. I quite enjoy Zak Starkey.

Queen + Paul Rodgers is ugly as well.

I have mixed feelings about this. Personally, I didn't care for Sammy Hagar's vocal style either, but from a broader standpoint I think the change just took Van Halen in a different artistic direction. Eddie and company still had considerable chops, and they certainly went on to create more big hits in the "post-David-Lee-Roth" days. I still remember playing "Best of Both Worlds" in our Rock-augmented pep band for basketball games.

To be honest, I do prefer the older Van Halen, though.
