Making my first cable

Thread Starter
the title says it all. I am going to make my first cable. I was wondering about a couple of things:

1) What diameter heatshrink/techflex to use? I have seen recommendations for 3/8 inch. If I do get 3/8 in, what shrink ratio should I be aiming for? 2:1?

2) How do I apply heatshrink? I imagine it involves heat. Do I really have to spend $40 and get a heat gun? Cheaper suggestions appreciated.

3) Where is a good place to get heatshrink/techflex? For the heatshrink, I have seen recommendations to get one with a sticky interior for better strain relief. Is that a good idea?

Thanks,
Nkk

1) Depends on cable diameter. Choose a heatshrink that is larger than the cable (and any other items it will go over, like connectors) and will shrink to smaller than the cable

2) Heat guns can be had for a little less on eBay. You can carefully use a lighter if you are only doing this one cable and don't want to invest in the gun. Keep the flame as far away as possible while still causing it to shrink.

3) I'm not a big fan of the heatshrink with glue on the inside (sometimes called double walled). In my experience it creates a mess but I guess that depends on how you're using it and how well you do it. Feel free to try it though.
