I was impressed by a song during Michael Jackson funeral, performed by one of his brothers,
sorry the ignorance but never got in The Jackson 5

I think it was smth like "when you smile", but don't know the title or the original composer,
that performance was incredible, highly recommended..

Nick Drake and Elliot Smith have some incredibly sad songs. They both ODed due to their depression. It is some very nice acoustic work as well.

skeletons- Rickie Lee Jones- the highlight of what already a very melancholy album, Pirates. It's about losing a love tragically and the way she half whispers half sings the word skeletons at the end gets me every time

Edit- Pirates also has the song Lucky Guy which must be written about Tom Waits

Seconded.

I'll add "Blind Willie McTell" of Bob Dylan to the list.

I actually teared up the first time I heard the Johnny Cash version. Hauntingly powerful given his past drug problems and personal problems. He did a cover of a song and made it his own, as if it was written for him.

"Grief" from Henry Threadgill's "Song Out Of My Trees" album. No lyrics but some amazingly affecting vocalizing. This is edgy jazz.

I agree and felt the same. He sung from a part of his soul that only one who has been consumed by drugs can identify.

"Down, Down, Down," by Joe Satriani is sure-fire party killer. Right up there with Floyd's "Wish You Were Here".

How could I forget this one ? Arguably one of the best songs ever written in French.

Jacques Brel - Ne me quitte pas

PS: yes, all the "If you go away" songs are covers of this one. The original French text is darker though.
