my current portable source is a 2gb zen moziac, which from the reviews I've read doesn't have very SQ, and won't to do justice to ~200 dollar IEMs...

I also think the sound card on my laptop is starting to go out -_-

thanks, yes, I did forget to mention, if you ask for their typeface logo or the "flying lady" it is free.

Oh, I agree, it doesn't sound bad at all, just that through an amp I found it sounds better, something that a beginner or lurker might not realize.

Stick, thanks for the comments.

By the way, I am looking for an amp for the JH13 for work and was thinking about the Headroom Micro Amp Ultra. How quiet is the amp with the JH13's? Can you hear any hiss with no music playing (or better yet, with no source connected) and the volume turned to a reasonable level?

Thanks for a well written, incisive review.
Awww, don't put it like that. He gains a pair of JH13s doesn't he? >

Thanks for the review Stick, it falls in line with what others have found. More specifically, that it's allowing audiophiles here to condense their collections down to this single headphone.

Nice writeup indeed. Well done, and congratulations!

I think that running something this high-end straight out of an MP3 player is a complete waste of money for sure. Heck, even a high end universal IEM, like SE530 or RE0 deserves something better than your average portable or cheap soundcard. Glad you like you JH13! I also really like the custom artwork on those. Looks REALLY nice!

Shellylh, I actually don't have the micro ultra, I have the desktop ultra version. But in answer to your question, on low gain, I don't hear any hiss until the volume knob is maxed out. On medium gain, I hear it just below max volume.

Stick, sorry, my bad. I read "micro" instead of "desktop." I am also thinking about getting a Headroom desktop so this is quite useful. Thanks.

I really like the style of your impressions. They are very easy to read but still descriptive enough. That i have to go check my bank account and remind myself that there is no way that i can afford these headphones yet.

Well i am glad that you enjoy the headphones and keeping posting impressions they are a pleasure to read

I dunno if I agree with you 100%...I agree that these scale very nicely w/ an amp but they sound awesome straight out of the iPod.

What a straight forward and useful description of your experience with the JH/13 PRO. Well done.
