Live at the Village Vanguard Discussion and Poll

Thread Starter
Probably more than any other venue in the history of jazz, the Vanguard played the role of housing to more definitive performances on tape than any other.

I'm making this thread to celebrate the club's legacy, and the artists who made such great music there.

You are welcomed to vote in the poll.....who do you think recorded the best set of music at the vanguard..........I obviously can't include everyone, I will try and be objective and leave a category open for recommendations that were not included.
I've been talking headphones with you for years. Now I can help you with your purchase:) Sales Specialist & Headphone Guru @ Headphones.com

I'm new here and wasn't going to make this my first post, but I was just done listening to the complete 4cd version of John Coltrane's performance at T.V.V. 1961 when I saw this post...

so I vote for Trane

cheers,
Ruud.

David, this is clearly a too big a challenge - I’m declining.

Bill Evans. Not that I have listened to all of the albums listed above.

Haven`t heard all listed (missing Lovano and and Henderson), but Evans` Sunday is such a Tour de Force that it would be hard to imagine picking anything else, even if I had heard them all.

That's my favourite of Evans' music, so he gets the nod. Haven't heard a couple of those albums though...

Don't think I can choose. Love the hell out of most of the albums here, though I'm almost tempted to go with State of the Tenor, Vols. 1 and 2 just because they're brilliant fairly contemporary records and more folks should hear them.

I have all the recordings listed in the poll but by far, my favorite is Bill Evans' "Turn Out the Stars: Final Village Vanguard Performances". The Waltz/Sunday set is very good, Secret Sessions' quality lacks a bit, but his final performances are outstanding in imho. Much more passion and excitement than the first two and the recording quality is superb.

Bill Evans. I keep going back to those two discs, and they're marvelous on SACD.

I have heard the Evans and of course the Coltrane. I won't listen to the Jarrett or the Marsalis (let's not go there!), but I actually really enjoy the Benny Green Trio's Testifyin' Live at the Village Vanguard. It's one of my favorite reasonably contemp. jazz albums out there.
