Phishing phone calls?

A few weeks ago I started getting phone calls from 416 935 2848. Googled the number and from what I can tell it's a company based in Toronto called CollectCorp. I believe they are masquerading as a collection agency trying to scam people into giving them money. I have no debt or credit cards, in fact I don't believe I even have credit yet (only bills I've ever paid to a company is my cell phone, and only for 3 months so far). Strange thing is, I've never answered nor called back, but they always leave a message in my voicemail saying they're looking for someone I don't know, leaving a name and callback number. I don't really feel like calling back to tell them they've got the wrong number if it's a phishing company. Unfortunately there's no way to block numbers with Telus Mobility.

Very annoying!

Last spring I was constantly getting calls as well... Was it mostly automatic? "This message is intended for [some person]. If you are not this person, please hang up. We are a debt collection agency." It probably started when I picked up a random call on my cell...

Eventually they stopped leaving me voicemails at the end of spring semester, however suspicious that sounds... I usually just pick up and hang up really fast because my voicemail fills up really fast with these damn messages.

Then one day after buying supplies for my β22 I got a call, same female robotic voice, under my name. Suspicious credit card activity. Called back and the robot mentioned my suspicious purchases, which were all made by me.

If you call them you may be greeted by an automated menu, maybe you'll find something there. I forgot the options that were given to me.

Nope, every voicemail message was an actual message left by an actual person, and even sounded fairly professional (like it was a Canadian speaking to me, not as if it had been outsourced to India). The last message, the person sounded slightly annoyed; it was the same man calling each time, this was maybe the 4th message. The last message said "I've been leaving multiple messages over the last few weeks, please call back as soon as possible", or something along those lines. I usually deleted them as soon as I listened to them.

If you google the number you'll find that people have been calling the number back and usually reaching a full answering machine, saying nobody is available to take their call. Sounds quite fishy to me.

I get suspicious purchases calls at least 3 or 4 times a year. It's best to call back using the number from the back of your card. It's always been legit with me and I've usually found out before hearing the message because my card gets denied. There's usually a message on the CC companies web site when you log into your account.

I just pay them off every month. I travel too much to not have credit cards.

Ah fair enough. If I had a credit card I wouldn't use it unless I had the money in the bank so I could pay it off immediately. I don't trust credit.
