I was going to a lab experiment today for my Phonology class. Basically, I was just supposed to listen to a bunch of speech sounds (f and th, in my case) and see how well I can distinguish them. Well, the computers didn't just have any headphones... they had AKG K240 MKIIs. All four of them. And they were only used to listen to people's recorded speech sounds. The whole time I was doing the experiment I was just amazed by the fact that they had some quality headphones for such a simple purpose.
And actually, I just ordered myself a pair of them a few days ago; I'd been looking up AKG headphones and decided to get those. Who woulda thought I'd be able to try them on during a lame phonetics experiment...
Looks like there are some audiophile linguists at my university. Definitely need some good headphones to distinguish those speech sounds.
