How Should I Budget for Headphones and Amp?

I haven't had headphones in my audio system in a while. I used to have a Stax system, but sold it for various reasons. I'm considering getting phones again, but would need an amp as my integrated does not have a headphone output.

Okay, so I'm on a serious budget. Between $200 -300 tops. I tend to like Grado's musical priorities with regard to their cartridges. John Grado is seriously into opera, so he loves to get that midrange down pat. From what I read, I'm not sure I'd like the top end of the more budget cans, being a bit more shrill. I'm thinking perhaps the Alessandro MS-1 or the Grado SR-225i phones. I'm certainly open to others. I see Headroom likes the Sennheiser HD448, but I saw a professional review citing to stay away if boomy bass is not your thing (It isn't).

I listen to most types of music, from vocal to jazz to rock to classical, and I appreciate tonality, nuance, lyricism and pace. I currently have a set of Koss PortaPro Jrs. as a cheap portable, and you know what? They're pretty musical and quite balanced, FAR better than the cheaper ones in the Koss line. On the other hand, I can hear the lack of ultimate resolution. Even the Grado SR60s wipe the floor with them in that area. It's not going to be my main form of listening, but for later at night, I'll use it.

So here's the thing, obviously the more I spend on the phones themselves, the less I can spend on an amp. With the above budget, what's the best way to spend the dough (and I could go used)? I'll go for quality over portability, but I also realize that a portable amp will allow me to get better sound from my portable players too. I see Headroom has their Total Bithead for $99 and I have seen the Minibox D. I have seen ones for less, too. I realize I may not approach the quality of the rest of my system, but I can't afford more now.

Any suggestions?

Warning, my suggestions are based on other people's opinions and some basic knowledge. I have no specific experience with this recommendation.

If you like Grado why not go for the SR60i. I did own the SR40s at one time and didn't find them to be shrill.

You can pair that with a Little Dot I+ amp. This is a tube hybrid amp. If you're worried at all about the Grados being harsh, tubes may be a solution. Again, I haven't heard the LD I+ but I did own the LD MKIII and thought it was a competent tube amp, especially for the price. I am assuming the rest of the LD line is going to have a similar build and sound quality. Reviews have all been pretty positive.

With the LD+ you'll have a lot of tube rolling options (I think the tube upgrade prices listed are a bit high though) and the amp has socketed op amps so you customize the sound. It also has a fairly small footprint and should look very nice on your desk.

For low impedence phones, i also can reccomend the Little Dot I+. Mine is serving me well even with stock tubes, and I'm awaiting LeftyGorilla to send me two sets of tubes, much sought after Gold Brand 408A, and Mullard M8161, the two tube sets I wanted most to hear.

Really though, you don't have to spend 300$ on an amp because you spent 300$ on headphones. It really depends on what you get, though. Most 100$ or less headphones will be low impedence, and as such can be driven well by the I+, and you'll find the same situation is true for grado's 1600$ headphones, the PS1000's. I'd probably take the I+ over most 1000$ amps for grado's, just because it's so well matched and cost effective.

You could even say they don't need the amp, but they certainly benefit from it. If you want a good all around setup, look at my signature:

ATH-AD700 + LD I+, this is a much celebrated and very powerful setup.

With that budget, are you willing to look at secondhand kit ? A variety of headphones and amps come up in the FS section here on a regular basis.

i'd definitely put headphones first, then amp with leftover, or even later on down the road. what are your sources?

either way i'd definitely recommend checking out the fs/ft forums here. from my experience, the products that are exchanged on this forum are in excellent condition and in most cases just as a good as new.

Thanks for your answers thus far.

Keep in mind that I do not have a headphone out in my integrated (a modified Unison Research Unico) so I NEED a headphone amp. Meanwhile, for sources, I have a VPI Scout table with Benz stereo and mono cartridges, and an original Rega Planet CD player. Additionally, I have my TV/DVR/VHS system hooked up to the integrated as well.

This will get you under your budget if you make an offer & it gets accepted..
