I can barely listen to my iPod Classic anymore.

I listened to a 320kbps rip of a CD on my laptop, then listened to it on my Classic, and it sounds much flatter, quieter, and not as impactful. Is there a way to mod my Classic to make it sound more like my stock laptop (which I'm happy with without sound card)? I was looking into the FiiO E5...will that give it that extra impact and spark I'm looking for? Or is there another mod?

Thanks in advance.

definitely getting a portable amp would help...it really depends on what your budget is. i think the imod is an option as well (although i don't really know much about the improvement), however that is a very expensive option.

and if you don't know what the imod is just search imod and i'm sure you'll find your answer.

We DO NOT and WILL NOT modify any of the other iPods, including the new 6th Generation iPod Classic, iPhone, iTouch, or any of the Nanos."

ALthough I am not entirely sure if a DIY improvement would be possible as I am currently looking into that as well, which classic do you own? I recently upgraded to 2009 160 and I like the SQ better.

I have the first 80GB Classic from 2007.

The primary reason is that your laptop has more power to put into its amp circuit. An iPod is designed for maximum battery life, so power to the amp gets compromised. You either need to use an external amp or more efficient headphones.

I don't know if the iMod is worth it. The problem with the iPod is that it's designed to last just a few years. All manufacturers carefully measure product life and don't design them to last more than a product generation or two. The trouble comes when you have to start cannibalizing other units to repair the one you have. Even if you DIY it, you're going to invest a lot of money into something that is essentially disposable. You'll also have to run lossless to get the most out of it and lossless rips take up a lot of space.

That's why I just run a plain iPod, no mods or anything else. I'll only put big money into stable components that should give me 10 or 20 years of service. Otherwise, I'd spend more upgrading the small stuff every year or two.

My 80g 6gen sounds pretty darn good with my Airhead, and MS1's if I do say so myself.

My "two previous generations down the road" 160gb Classic sounds as good as my iPod Touch 2g by using a Predator with it. As stated above, an amp works wonder with it

the fiio E5 will definitely give that extra impact and spark as well as power you are looking for to make it comparable to ur laptop. i was in a similar situation after i compare it with the laptop but yeah a fiio definitely helps and it made me not to miss my laptop on the go.

Why all the mincing around, he can not get an iMod, the plain iPod differs mainly from the laptop because of signal path and power. Get an amp and a Line-Out Dock (LOD) and you will see a much greater improvement. My setup after this greatly improved. You don't need to spend an arm and a leg (even though, why else be here ) and I would guarantee great improvement, a lower end amp and relatively cheap LOD could be had form the FS forum. You'll love it.

Which is better a Fiio E1 or a LOD Cable? and by how much?

Get a SONY for Christ Sake. Mine sounds way better than my PCs (and I have 3) or my iPod Touch. At least try one in a store and you'll see! That is what you are missing... 80GB is a lot though

I have the 80G Classic and am very happy with it. Using the line out (connector at the bottom of the iPod) rather than the headphone socket gives a very worthwhile improvement IME. To do so, you will need a seperate portable amp and a connecting cable. If you take my advice and use the line out, you will need a Line Out Dock. I bought a cheap one off ebay and was not that pleased. Russ Andrews does an excellent LOD for about £30. Good headphones make a big difference as well. HTH.
