Cans for rock music - Budget: 450USD

Thread Starter
As said in the title, im searching for a new pair of headphone at about 450-500 USD.

I mostly listen to rock-like music, and i like powerful sound with deep and definite bass. I'd like to have a good soundstage reproduction too...

Actually, i'm searching for a pair of Sennheiser HD650, but i'm not sure if they respond to my needs, please help me...

My source is PC with Asus Xonar Essence STX soundcard, wich have the TI TPA6120A2 headphone amplifier. From what i've read, this chip doesn't have problem in driving high impedance headphones like HD650.

TY for help!

HD 650s no doubt. There is a guy on Audiogon that sells them for under $400.

The HD650s are notoriously picky on amps to sound non-veiled, so you might want to keep that in mind. There's always the option of Grados, but they won't deliver the soundstage of a Sennheiser. Denons might be worth a look too. D5000s have good soundstage, and sounds pretty good with rock.

If you are aiming for rock, you should look at grados. There is a reason that most "cans for rock" threads end in grado.

I think the Denon D5000's are slightly too refined for rock and although their overall character isn't laid-back, they sure can be with some albums.
A vote for Grados as well.

I just got a pair of HF-2s for 450, I highly suggest you try to find the same

Grado always has a good reputation for rock musics. I only had a SR225, its amazing, and they have low impedance so you can just plug in and rock! I sold it because it sounds pretty thin..lil sound stage to my ears..

For around $500 you can have RS-1 used.

Grados. What do you need soundstage for for rock?
My SR-60i's are great for rock/metal/etc. and I can only imagine that SR-225/325's or RS-1's sound unbelievable with rock.
I'd have to say Grado

I wouldn't recommend HD650 for rock. They're great, and the new ones are not veiled ( god that's getting old ) for classical.
D5000 or SR225 or Sr325.

my "cheapo" Grado 125s sound great with rock. I'd imagine that the ultimate Grado cans for your budget are the 325s Call up headphone.com for a better price than what's stated, make sure you tell them you're a member of head-fi.org

RS1 or HF2 for sure, forget the HD650...Check the for sale forums, you can probably get a used pair of RS1s for under $450 shipped these days

Another vote for Grado here. My SR325is kick ass with any heavy guitar track i throw at it.
