So what do you think was Chick Corea's best band? - Page 2

Is anyone else a fan of Chick's playing on drummer-turned-attorney Pete LaRoca Sims' quartet date Turkish Women At The Bath? Recorded in 1967, it also has the distinction of being one of the few sessions where brilliant tenorist John Gilmore does some moonlighting on the Sun Ra Arkestra. Collectors' trivia: If you have a copy of Bliss!, it's the same album reissued in the '70s in Chick's name rather than LaRoca's. It took LaRoca something like 30 years and a couple of lawsuits to revert the session back to his name. Chick sounds unbelievable on it, though.

while the fusion stuff is great, i saw him in the early '80s @ the Village Vanguard in nyc playig in an acoustic trio with Miroslav Vitous on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. these were perhaps the most amazing concerts i've ever seen of any genre of music (and i've seen many gems). everyone, indeed virtually every limb, was playing in a different time signature with no one playing on the beat, yet an overall beat emerged (i imagine there must have been mathematical relationships amongst what everyone was doing). what a tour de force! it was just hold on to your hat and go for a wild ride!  we made sure to see the late show after being blown away by the early show.

i once ran into a gent who told me that this was a famous show and that there is a recording of it out there, although i've never come across it. is anyone familiar with it?

I'd vote for the first RTF band (the first RTF album is flat out fantastic, just listened to it over the weekend), but I also like the lineups with Bill Connors and Al DiMeola a lot too.  Someone else mentioned the Five Peace Band with John  McLaughlin, that's another recording that gets a lot of play for me but that was more of a one-off thing.

It amazes me to look at the musicians who played on Miles' In a Silent Way (Chick, McLaughlin, Shorter, Zawinul, etc.), and trace them through the bands that they subsequently anchored - what an incredible group of musicians!
