I've glanced through a book "The Dark Side of the Moon - the Making Of the Masterpiece",
by John Harris, 2005.
Here are the relevant excerpts:

In 1994 David Gilmour said:
Quote:
What we miss of Roger is his drive, his focus, his lyrical brilliance - many things.
But I do not think any of us would say that music was one of the main ones ....
he is not a great musician!
Nine years later (2003?) David Gilmour commented:
Quote:
I had a much better sense of musicality than he did.
I could certainly sing in tune much better [laughs]. So it did work very well.

In 2003 Roger Waters listened to the 5.1 remix of "The Dark Side of the Moon"
in a famous studio in Bahamas. - He approved the remix.

Asked about David Gilmour's comments he angrily pre-empted any such idea:
Quote:

There's no question that Dave needs a vehicle to bring out
the best of his guitar playing. And he's a great guitar player.
But the idea, which he's tried to propagate over the years, that's
he's somehow more musical than I am, is absolute f...in' nonsense.
It's an absurd notion, but people seem quite happy to believe it.

Whom to believe David Gilmour or Roger Waters?

P.S.
In fact Roger Waters said: "That's crap."

Just listen to their solo albums and the answer is obvious.

^I listen to Roger's solo albums more than any Pink Floyd albums or Dave's albums.

What do they mean by "Musical"?

Dave certainly has the edge in portraying emotion through his instruments IMO - That alone doesn't make him more musical, though.

Ooooh, wrong answer to what should have been obvious.

The emotional aspect is exactly why David is more musical. I listen to David's solo albums for the music experience.

Roger has lots of ideas and is willing to experiment, but those ideas aren't always appropriate or properly portrayed in the music. Maybe he should be writing essays or doing TV documentaries.

That made each other better musicians, and together they are stronger than they are apart. Shame they couldn't find a way to get along.

I think Gilmour is more musical - but they're still better together.

Yeah well you're probably right that Roger uses music for his ideas etc etc.. I guess I prefer that to the likes of Dave's stuff.. just more involving for me sort of thing...

sorry for hijacking,
I understand now why I like "The Clientele", their singer has a similar voice to young Roger Waters,

btw, does anybody here like "The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking", I find everywhere bad reviews, but I love it..

I'm not very educated in Pink Floyd yet, but in an effort to answer this question to contribute to this thread, I've discovered that Dave Gilmour is sort of a jerk, but his musical style was better to me. I seemed to dislike the waters pink floyd and prefered the gilmour floyd.

If you think David is a jerk, I cannot imagine what you think Roger is...

I'll have to listen more to really come to a thoughtful and useful opinion.

Agreed.

Still, as much as I adore Pink Floyd, I find Roger Waters very, very distasteful.

That's odd. In every interview I've seen, Gilmour has always come across as a nice guy.
