How do I buy a car in Brazil and drive it back to the US?!?

I want to buy a VW Kombi in Brazil and drive it back to the US.

The Brazilian Kombi

Is this too much work than it's worth?

Will I get killed in taxes and converting to US emissions standards?

Just curious if anyone else had tried this before.

Thanks!

Converting it will be nightmare...and it takes years. I know people that have tried with the B5S4s and some gave up others estimated costs at over $100k.

Maybe you can pay an importer?

very carefully.

Don't. Way too much money to make it legal enough for plates/tags in the US. And driving a new car through Central America? Not smart.

Awesome idea. It will be phenomenally difficult, though, and almost no one will know that it's not a cleaned up old bus.

err on the side of caution. Visit the your local VW dealer here in the good old U-S-of-A.

Attempting to drive that car from brazil to the us might not work but I am pretty sure that you would be able to 1up any story that anyone tells from then on. If you're up for an adventure, that sounds like a fantastic one.

I'm always up for an adventure. You cover airfare to Brazil, and I'll share the drive home. I'm an experienced road-tripper, and my feet won't start to smell until day 3, which is longer than most, and an under-appreciated asset in a travel companion.

Life is short, friend. I once abandoned a car on the road in Bulgaria because I couldn't pay the speeding ticket. The cop was too lazy to tow it, though, so I snuck back that night and drove on.

Still, driving across the EU is significantly easier than driving across south and central America.

Road Trip!

If you are killed only figuratively, you will be fortunate.

Tell me you'll be in Chicago for CanJam, I seriously want to buy you a beer or two.
