Favorite Music to write/study/work to

Thread Starter
I've recently come to the conclusion that I do my best writing when listening to Agalloch. I find it strangely focusing and calming, considering it is rather doom-y. Much of the rest of my music just doesn't work for me at all for anything that requires creativity.

A year ago I spent 3 or 4 sessions (4+ hours each) working on a 12 page philosophy essay listing ONLY to Agalloch's The White EP over and over. I've been working on a paper the past few days and been listening through their whole discography while I research and write.

For studying (like hardcore cramming for exams), I find that I generally like very active music like melodic death (Insomnium, older Trivium) or upbeat music jazz (Coltrane and Thelonious Monk mostly as I am still very new to the genre). I'm getting into classical but I haven't had time to listen to much of it (I am too busy listening to jazz!).

What music do you find most beneficial to listen to while you write? And while you study/work? Though I'm mostly interested in while writing.

I usually listen to some Jazz/Big band or some Brazilian Samba or some sort of latin music. I just recently found the musician Armik who does some amazing flamenco guitar work and its very soothing. These types of music are very relaxing and energetic but aren't too distracting

I find that if i listen to any rock or songs that I know, I'll end up listening to the songs rather than focusing on my work.

It's not really music, but stuff from a guy named Dr. Jeffrey Thompson. He does nature sounds and adds things that human ears cannot pick up, but it's suppose to soothe. It actually is really nice to study to.

For writing, my go to guy when I have a bad case of writers block is..

Debashish Bhattacharya `Hindustani Slide Guitar`

Other than that, I like Miles Davis `Bitches Brew`

For the most part I can listen to anything - I put it on shuffle and let 'er rip. But if I really need to concentrate, I need music without lyrics - preferably classical (my recent choice is Shostakovich: The String Quartets).

1. Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington
2. Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians
3. John Fahey: Best of the Vanguard Years

I can't do any work with music on, I end up just listenning to the music.
Maybe I just love music too much.

Minimalist 20th Century classical, ambient (e.g. Brian Eno) and, when the mood strikes, Bach. Though I can get too involved in Bach, so he's not always a good choice for work/study.

Strangely enough, I find metal really good to listen to when I study. Opeth and Tool are my artists of choice.
Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac are also great.

Of course, you can't go wrong with Beethoven's piano sonatas.

Something low tempo. Ambient, chillout, e.l.

also any of Mozart's lighter pieces (serenades, piano sonatas, piano variations, etc.)

pretty much any 'variations' except Beethoven's and Bach's

Ravel, Saint-Saens, Johann Strauss

Grateful Dead concert recordings do very well for me as work/study to music.

A variety of classical music will also get a spin. Sometimes baroque music. Sometimes symphonic. Sometimes organ works (that means Bach mostly).

Sometimes ambientish electronic like Moby will do the trick depending on what I'm doing. Sometimes full on ambient like natural ocean waves is what is needed. Gregorian Chant style music can also fit in here.

I did a lot of engineering and math type homework while listening to Blue Öyster Cult and similar during college.

Wow, a lot of classical in here it seems. i can't do classical when I study because I think too much in to the music and end up just zoning. I usually prefer electronic music. Lately I've been doing Groove Armada -"Black Light" and Crystal Method - "Divided by Night." Other artists/albums that get a lot of love during study time are Daft Punk, Kaskade, and ATB.

Occasionally I do Rap, like Lil Jon or Immortal Technique, and some progressive rock, ie Pink Floyd or Alphataurus.
