I hate to do this, but I'd love some help picking out my first pair of good headphones.

I know, these threads get made all the time, and I hate to add to them. But I've been wanting to order a pair of cans for months now, and have continually put it off because I'm just not sure what to get.

To start, my source is a soundblaster audigy soundcard, no amp. All my music is v0 or flac.

I thought I wanted to HD555's, because everyone loves them. Then I decided the AD700's would be better since they are more comfortable and have a bit of a bigger soundstage. Then I decided I wanted to go Grado because I listen to a lot of rock. And now, I just don't know where to go.

However, I do know what I for sure want in my headphones.
-~$100
-Decent bass. Not super exaggerated, but I listen to quite a lot of hip hop, and I like the bass decently pronounced, and I really like to hear and feel the bass drum when I'm listening to hardcore. I guess that means I want both tight and punchy, and booming, which kind of contradict each other. My HD202's certainly don't have enough.
-The highs need to not be so harsh. The main genre's of music I listen to are hardcore (and it's many, many subgenre's) and skramz. I find my 202's to be quite fatiguing with these types of music, because of how harsh the highs are. I'll often find myself gritting my teeth while listening to grindcore because of that.
-Comfort is huge. I'll be wearing them for hours at a time, daily. This is another area where my 202's fail. I'd like them to go completely around my ears (circumaural?)
-Opened back or closed back really doesn't matter to me. Closed back would sure be nice to block out the sound of my family, but I understand that open backed phones provide better sound quality and that is far more important to me.
-Soundstage isn't that big of a deal to me. These phones will be used exclusively for music, so it really doesn't factor in for me.

Right now, I'm leaning toward the MS-1's. I'm worried that they won't provide enough bass for me, however. And honestly, outside of sennheiser's, grado's, and Audio Technica's lines, I know nothing about headphones. I just know there is a pair of cans out there that are perfect for me, just need to find them.

For extended periods, I wouldn't recommend closed headphones...I have M-Audio Q40s which are excellent for hip-hop, but get way too hot ...hard to wear for extended periods. Open headphones will generally get you better sound, but obviously also bother people nearby.

Grados get very mixed reviews for comfort...but since you'll be using yours for many hours a day, I'd say stay away unless you've worn them before. I didn't find the build quality on low-end Grados to be too great...on my SR60s, one side won't stay connected to the headband-piece.

AD700s.

The only down side to them is that there might not be that 'umph' bass that you want.

Sounds like Ultrasone or Beyerdynamic territory to me . . . but they are probably out of the budget . . .

The AD700 will probably outdo the Grado in Hip-Hop, but it probably won't do it nearly as well as some other cans out there.

I'd be more than willing to go up to 150 ish right now to get something that would fit my needs. I'd rather spend a little more now than be disappointed with something cheaper.

Which Ultrasone or Beyer's fit my needs?

Yeah, I'd go Ultrasone if you want good bass but however for overall sound quality, maybe something like Shure SRH440 or SRH840 as well.

Generally all mid-higher end Ultrasones are seen as bassy. I'm not very knowledgeable of the product line as I don't own a pair or have a large interest in them myself.

I'd see what people are selling used in our marketplace to get an idea of what fits in your budget and do research on those particular models. The cheapest new pair besides the iCans, etc, is the HFI-580 on Amazon which is $160 new.

I'm going to say either Denon AH-D1001 or Shure SRH840. Here's why:

1. The main candidates at ~$100 are, as you know, MS-1, HD555, AD700, D1001, ES7, Q40, and SRH440.
2. I preferred D1001 over MS-1, HD595 (which sounds similar to 555, on all accounts), and Q40. I felt that the MS1s were harsh, and was generally unimpressed with 595 and Q40.
3. AD700 is often said to be bass-lean, which is unideal for hiphop.
4. ES7 is often said to be uncomfortable.
5. SRH840 is currently available for US$150 or less, and will improve with amping (which, if you stay on Head-Fi, will eventually happen).

I really like the looks of those SRH840's, and the reviews seem really positive. 150 really isn't that bad of a price if they're worth it. The D1001's also seem good, though they don't look as well built as the shure's. However, they are cheaper. I'll definitely keep reading up on these two.

Hm, it's less sturdy, this is true. But that's not a big deal for home use; and for portable use, D1001 has the plus of being smaller and therefore easier to transport. Just get a $10 headphone bag off eBay. Those 840s are massive, btw. I'm trying to sell mine, actually.

How much are you trying to get for them? The fact that they have a detachable cable is a huge plus.

DarthPuma, I recommend Grado SR60i as the first headphone for every headfier to be.
Go, get one, and be happy with your first purchased headphone, like what happened to me.

i would suggest the Beyerdymanic DT150 if you can find one. It can be had for around $140. I liked it much more than the DT770. The Denon 1001 is decent but sounded alot like the Bose triports which I dont care for. I have had limited experience with ultrasones at a local hi-fi shop but they all sounded like garbage not sure why but that was just my experience with them.

@VALIENTE, if you're going to continue spamming, at least get a different pic...

You'll probably be fine with any headphone you buy. If you don't have a reference-point (friends' systems/etc) you'll most likely find any of the above recommended phones fine

(Maybe not the Alessandros or Grados though, i'll vouch for that one. Definitely a nono for hiphop imo lol, well from the short listen of SR60's I had, didn't actually listen to hiphop...)

Well, just about anything.. As long as its not Skullcandy or Bose *eyeroll*
