-also Tchaikovsky piano trio op.50 is a great work i can recommend.
-if you want to listen strong conductor for beethoven, take a look "karl bohm".
-Hilary Hahn's "bach violin concertos" recording is great. (worked with l.a. chamber orch.)
-for high quality recordings i can say claudio abbado's all works are great. (especially with berliner philharmoniker).
-for chopin,i recommend "idil biret" who is great pianist from turkey. her recordings all new and one of the best ever i have heard.

have a great shopping

Thanks Witness!

Which Claudio Abbodo's / karl bohm you would recommend best?

Piano is my sister's territory I'll throw those recommendation to her for the budget sharing purpose lol. Yes I read on wiki Hahn has been playing Bach almost everyday since she's young (hmm, small?) So yes I think that's a great recommendation.

Of cause I wont be able to get everything but @ least if I have a large list I have a better chance of hits on my music shopping trip
post #4 of 59
if i have to choose one,it's beethoven 9. symp recording. Because first of all recording quality is top i have ever heard.as you know for huge stage effect recording quality is very important. Beyond this point, berliner philharmoniker is always my first choice for beethoven recordings.

but abbado is lifeless conductor so for example i prefer to listen 6. symphony from karl bohm instead of abbado.
For current recordings of Beethoven's symphonies, you can't go wrong with Osmo Vanska and the Minnesota Orchestra on BIS.
i would skip all that and get the new DG box set. great selection.

Thanks witness. Just went youtube to have an impression of Karl Bohm and found his Beethoven symhony 5.
A bit slow to my taste. Personelly I would prefer Zubin Mehta's presentation. Under 8 minutes, though I could use faster tempo and longer pauses or ret:P

Berlin Philharmoniker is indeed a good one. I'm currently ripping my Brahms Piano concertos from Emil Gilels and Berliner Philharmoniker. Cant wait to listen to it

I couldn't agree more with scompton. Just make sure you get the recently issued 5 SACD complete set rather than the separate issues as this is sold at the price of only 2 full price CDs.

Also agree about the DG 111 set. The Beethoven recordings by Kleiber, Karajan and Takacs Quartet listed by the are all safe recommendations. The Bernstein German reunion B9 is obviously a document of an important historical event (it's also available on DVD, by the way), but when it comes to recordings of the B9 i think you can do a lot better. The Bernstein/VPO recording is e.g. very well regarded in some quarters, although I have not heard it. In a recent lengthy discussion over at the Good Music Guide forum, the Fricsay/BPO B9 on DG received a lot of praise, and you may also want to check that one out.

Finally, with respect to your request for recommendations of records by particular artists, if you are to own only one Maria Callas recording it is hard to overlook the 1956 Tosca with de Sabbata conducting. Fairly general consensus is that this Tosca has never been surpassed since (it's recorded in mono, however).

yes really good collection thanks.

@OneSec
like i said, karl bohm is a strong conductor and sometimes looks slow for some analytical symphonies. but i really recommend to listen beethoven's 6. symph. from him. makes you feel all emotions and beautiful melodies.

also i have more then ten different recording for mozart's requiem, but karl bohm's interpretation is the best..

actually world's best 5. symph. recording made by karajan with berliner philharmoniker. you should really listen.

Thanks all for your good recommendations. I'll keep them checked. Will update the initial post soon I'm caught with office matters currently.

Heard the version on Carlos Klieber for B5. I would say that is a reference record - great recording. But weird I still prefer Metha's presentation - I probably got poison by him already. I'll give another couple rounds of proper and careful listening. (on lousy car audio which misses the soft parts even @ 3 o'clock volume)

I'm building the library collection base on computer audio so SACD might be a challenge at this moment. The High-Fi set has been collecting dust for years I'm not even sure its working now :P

Recommendations:
Maria Callas - 1956 Tosca with de Sabbata conducting (I think I have that already but need to check again)
B9 - Bernstein/VPO (assume its Vienna)
B5 - Karajan/BPO (they record 3 times I believem with a couple individual live performances so might be challenging to determine the on you mentioned)
B6 - Karl bohm.

Just a note for OneSec since he's doing computer as source and ripping. Many of the BIS CDs have pre-emphasis. If you rip a BIS CD you need to check for pre-emphasis and correct for it if it is there. Info on correcting pre-emphasis here. I don't know if that particular BIS CD has pre-emphasis or not.

If it's a hybrid SACD you can rip the CD (redbook) layer. A regular CD player will read the CD layer. You don't need an SACD player.

I don't know if it does or not, but my rips sound very good so it probably doesn't. I rip with dbPowerAmp.

I hate not able to make the full use of a more expansive SACD playing it on a normal player... call me stingy!! hahaha but at least I can look at my friends' collection and snatch them home now!

Indeed I’m using EAC and never noticed such feature. Good read and /salute for your dedication to discover and share this information. I have Sox standby in my rip directory now! Don’t think I have the courage to go through all the CDs I ripped T_T I’ll probably go over my top priority RIPs such as Beethoven David Oistrakhs and YoYo ma :P

I'm glad you brought this out before I finish ripping my 1001 CDs into my library. Thank you so much.

P.S: Still very busy with work. Will amend the list tomorrow
