Sound check option on iPod and iTunes

Hey guys. I've never paid to much attention to settings in iTunes I mainly only used it to manage music. And to rip my CDs to AAC or 320 and that's all I ever did with settings.

Anyways I have a touch 32GB 3rd Gen and it has been running default with sound check. It basically makes volume equal accross all songs. What does everyone think about sound check. I've read it lowers the battey life when enabled. I just turned it off today though.

Any input would be appreciated. And what about ivolume

I don't think Sound Check does what you said. I think if it is on then your iPod uses EQ settings set in iTunes. In iTunes you can set EQ presets for each and every song and that gets synchronized and used if sound check is on... But I might be wrong, after all I don't use iTunes... thanks God I'm lucky to have a real EQ.

Yeah, you are not right in this case.
Sound check is basically an analog for "replay gain". It analyses each track's volume and when turned on equalizes it across the board so you wouldn't have to lose your hearing every time a louder song comes on. So nothing to do with the EQ presets.

I use it on my ipod but I'd be interested to know if sound check uses album gain or track gain since it's not customisable withing itunes.

If I remember correctly, its track only, no album setting. Good if you shuffle tracks, otherwise useless. Also, I think apple bases it from 89db where replay gain bases 85db.

So should I use it or is this more of a personal preference type of thing.

And I usually don't use the EQ on my iPod or on iTunes but then I don't use iTunes to actually play music. I use foobar for that.

Thanks for reply. Right now it's turned off but maybe I should leave it on. So will it raise the lower volume songs to be slightly louder and uniform to the rest also?

I leave it on in itunes so it sets all the values, but leave it off on the ipod unless I'm listening to playlists or shuffle. I don't use itunes as my main media player so I don't mind leaving it on.

The iPod plugin for foobar allows the Album Gain field for files to be set as the Soundcheck gain adjustment. Using it right now, and it works perfectly fine.
