I have the band stretched to the point where I have contact for a proper seal of the ear cups (seal is important for response balance)...that's it! The foam on top (wrongfully belittled by members IMO) compresses instantly and support come from the band. Just enough spacing from the foam to allow air flow between your noggin and the band.
The Headband of the Audez'e is four separate pieces of material. Looks like the outside legs are plastic, and the inside are metal? Have to look closer. I was surprised as I thought it was one solid piece. Multiple pieces are better for the redundant feature...and for ventilation between the straps.
I have a bald dome and I can't feel the strap. I have limits when leather is used on top!
I like the Senn 600 for example, but it's less comfortable now in comparison (high clamp pressure). You have to be careful molding and stretching the 6XX cause you can break the top strap (I have done it). The adjustment (banding like) material is easy to spring, more care is needed.
The 800 is almost as heavy, not in initial clamping but in weight (it's not light despite being "plastic"). Good geometry and the large ear cup (when hung low) and the is clamping barely noticeable. The 800 doesn't balance however when it's on the head as well as the Audez'e.
The drivers are large and heavy in the Audez'e...but it's manageable through your adjustment (in time) and good initial geometric design.
Oddly, the early Grado's (my HP-2's) are the most comfortable! The band isn't spring material but stiff, yet malleable so you can mold it just so. I have my pairs just so!! They have elven like weight on the ears...
(Edit): The headband is single piece of Metal with three slits.
