DAP with at least 60GB besides an ipod?

I have owned many ipods, from the very 1st one to the 6g classic. Touch, nano...you name it.
I'm looking to try something else out. Only a want a music player, nothing else.

I have three requirements I'm after.

1) Must be 60GB HD minimum
2) Has better balanced SQ than a ipod, through the HP out (I will not use an external amp).
3) Not a zune!

Any reason why you don't want the Zune? Is it the software, the player UI, or are you on Mac/Linux?

If you still have an old iPod lying around, you could try Rockbox. You'll get the same SQ (better EQ though), but more features and you won't be tied down to iTunes.

What's with the refusal to use a headphone amp? Do you need the space? If you still have an iPod, just get an LOD and a Fiio E5 or Cmoy. It'll be a noticeable, affordable improvement.

Waiting for a 64GB Sony player or a 64GB Sandisk player would probably be your best bet if you don't want to try a Rockboxed iPod with amp and LOD.

I have used the LOD and a separate amp, it is a little better. For me though not worth the improvement. Also it's not very pocket friendly...lol

The sony X is just opposite of what I want, wifi, radio tuner all that junk I do not like or need. The touch I have is lame enough, who wants to search the web on that slow tiny touch screen thing...

Does no one else make a basic HD music player like the 160gb classic?

Nobody is talking about the X series! We are suggesting the S_40 series. Those are not touch, no BS players with digital S-master amp (like the X), so far only in Japan.

The Toshiba Gigabeat F60 would fit your criteria - you would need to mod it to Rockbox to utilize it to its full potential, however (not difficult to do).

60GB HDD-based player. Will do video via Rockbox, but primarily its use would be for music. The HP out is quite good and it can drive some decent headphones without an amp. Rockbox will allow for OGG Vorbis / FLAC support, and supports gapless and drag and drop. It also has an excellent EQ.

The bad: Very difficult to find, even on eBay (20GB and 40GB versions are more common). Also, it's fairly large - similar in size to the Zune 30. If you can find one, they usually go for less than US $100.

What amp did you use? With my Cmoy, my Clip+ (unamped) and iPod Photo (with LOD) sound almost exactly the same to me. A better amp might yeild different results, but I don't have the cash for one right now. That Clip+ has a pretty good headphone out.

Just wait for a high capacity Clip+ and 32GB micro SD cards. Either that, or get a netbook and USB DAC.
