Anybody else trying the current ubuntu release?

I am. It's rather nice. I have made the switch from ubuntu to kubuntu, and decided to get rid of all of the windows on my laptop, keeping it (almost) entirely open source. The only thing proprietary on it any more is the broadcom wireless driver. The instal was a little tricky, but this was entirely due to having to play with the wireless drivers, everything else was entirely hitch-free.

It really is an extremely usable OS these days.

Not on a ubuntu though, i got a new 2.5" external hdd and installed Linux Mint 6 on it. Works pretty good, except digital hardware drivers for my motherboard..... Even fglrx works flawlessly with my ati card
I prefer Gnome though, just cant get along with KDE and customizing it.....

Indeed its getting easier to get everything running nowadays, can still remember the fights i had with Red Hat 7.

This is the first release since Heron that i have not installed at Beta stage. I'm not sure I'll switch over, really.

Are there any practical benefits over Jaunty?

Anyone thinking about trying it out should try unetbootin. I used it this time and it's way faster and easier than downloading and burning an ISO.

UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads

Of course there's Wubi too, which is even easier if you already have Windows.

I can't compare to Jaunty (not fairly, anyways) because I made the switch to kubuntu, and some of the changes will be retaled to gnome vs KDE.

BUT, the biggest thing for me seems to be the media handling is significantly more polished. Youtube is clean and non-jerky, BBC iPlayer plays, and fullscreens fine. Audio worked straight out of box (didn't under Jaunty or Intrepid)etc...

It seems like a pleasing upgrade.

Trying it - my first experience with Linux. It's all a bit strange, but not necessarily in a bad way.
