There is no such animal as a '3G 8GB Touch' ..

After responding to a couple of posts and having it raised in a PM, I felt that this deserved a thread of its own - hopefully, I have overestimated the number of folk who are labouring under this misconception.

If you go to your local Apple Store online, you will be greeted by 3 models - the 8GB, 32GB and 64GB. Per the Wikipedia entry, the 2G Touch was intro'd in September, 2008, offering 8/16/32GB models :

List of iPod models - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In September, 2009, Apple dropped the 16GB Touch, added a 64GB model and installed the internals from the iPhone 3GS into this model and the *new* version of the 32GB Touch. To the best of my knowledge, they did absolutely nothing to the 8GB model, and this is reflected in the Wikipedia entry above. Both the 2G and 3G Touch share the Cirrus Logic DAC which is much maligned here, but you are unlikely to see anything beyond Apple branding in recent teardowns of Apple portables.

The point that I am getting to is that we cant compare the '3G 8GB Touch' with *anything* - it doesnt exist. For all I know, Apple are planning to hit us with a surprise release in December, but I very much doubt it. If you bought an 8GB Touch after September this year, it should be exactly the same as if you had bought one in February, but given some of the wildly different experiences folk report with various iPod models, I wont be betting my house on that.

This should be fairly easy to confirm or deny with 2 people who purchased one back then and more recently, by sharing their model numbers.

Allow me to be one. I have an 8GB touch. The model is MB528LL/A. It was listed on Amazon at the time as a 2nd generation but I only bought it about 6 months ago.

Nevermind. You're incorrect. I just looked up on Amazon the 8gb 3rd generation. The model number is MC086LL/A.

The newer one supports Bluetooth 2.1. It could be that the differences only lie in actual iPhone OS 3.0, which the 2nd generation is upgradeable to. Regardless, they are still identified by different model numbers.

And in your Wiki entry, it states:

second 8, 16, 32 GB USB 9 September 2008 Mac: 10.4
New tapered chrome back with Nike+ functionality, volume buttons, and built-in speaker added. iPhone OS 2.0 and App Store access standard. Bluetooth support added but not made active until iPhone OS 3.0, which requires an upgrade fee.

third 32, 64 GB USB 9 September 2009 Mac: 10.4
video: 6 Updated to include the upgraded internals from the iPhone 3GS; includes Voice Control support and bundled remote earphones.

Amazon can call it whatever they want, and Apple can put whatever model number on it they want to - I'm more interested in hearing from people who can hear any significant difference at all between one purchased pre-September and one after. I auditioned the 8GB and the 32GB Touch earlier this month, and the latter is a significant improvement to my ears. I post this in the hope that anyone reading it will think twice before buying the 8GB Touch on the assumption that it has been 'revamped' : it hasnt, regardless of model number.

You can't base what you hear as proof. Perhaps the new software is responsible for any change in sound you are hearing. And you are not comparing one 8gb to another 8gb.

The OP is right. There are several mentions of this around, including this one from slashgear :

"While the entry-level 8GB iPod touch remains unchanged from its second-gen format, allowing Apple to hit the all-important $199 price point, the 32GB and 64GB third-gen models get a significant boost in speed."
