The iRiver SlimX iMP-550 has a remote with the output connector mounted in such a way that only very slim 1/8" connectors can fit. The hole is in the lower right, with the round part surrounding the button creating an overhang that would interfere with normal connectors:

I'm referring to the shoulder just at the base of the stereo 1/8 inch phono pin. iRiver supplies short extension "adapter" cable to work around this issue.
Problem is, the supplied cable is tiny and weak. I've broken one already (went intermittent).
I'd love to find a source for these cables, short of writing iRiver every month for a spare. Better still would be to find a tiny connector so that I could make an even better cable.
Here is what a typical cable's connectors look like:

The black shoulder near the pin is normally about 0.30-0.38 inches. It needs to be about 0.25 inches to fit the iRiver remote.
The typical connector part available in radio shack looks like this:

It has the screw-on plastic base. Very crude. If one tries to grind this down to fit the iRiver, just around the shoulder, it starts to fall apart. Same with a right-angle connector (although I may try that one again, especially if I can find a better part than Radio Shack's).
I'd welcome any advice on getting such connectors, right-angle connectors, or cables. (I've got a dialog going with iRiver, so maybe they will have ideas. I'm trying to coax them into either changing the design of the remote, or getting a supplier to provide the necessary parts in the aftermarket.)
