I did and considered it to be extremely simplistic, like it was made by very-very lazy people. It is just eatable, there are nothing to rave on. Below is the rating of european food I tried:

1. French
2. Spain
3. Italian
4. Portuguesse

All of them, except French, are not the cousins I am missing for. Any day, I prefer (ordered, best first) Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Uzbekian, Mexican, Georgian, Ukrainian (which is my native).

My immediate vicinity is sadly lacking in Uzbek, Georgian, and Ukrainian food. The Belarussian and Russian food I had was not inspiring in the least, but I doubt I experienced the best of it. Those are now on my list.

Typical French restaurant food, I don't care for too much. I can't eat a lot of it because I'm allergic to dairy. Country food is good, but not as easy to find in restaurants. Even when traveling in France, we look for SE Asian or Italian before French food. We didn't have much luck finding non French food in a recent trip to Alsace-Lorraine. We did have one really good French meal. We did have one really good French meal - rabbit leg over mushroom ragout with prunes, and roasted fall vegetable platter.

I can say from our last trip, nouvelle cuisine is over. Portions were even bigger than here in the US.
