HeadRoom Micro Ultra DAC + Micro Ultra Amp experience?

Thread Starter
Does anyone have this combo setup of both the HeadRoom Micro Ultra DAC and amp?

I'm saving up for a nice headphone amp to use with my headphones and heard good things about the micro ultra. My other question would be are DACs worth it? They are very expensive. My sources will be primarily FLAC files from computer and CDs from Denon DCD-590 player. Thanks in advance!

I can find reviews on the micro ultra combo that you refer to using google. As for DAC's, they are worth it in my experience. Maybe not for some but upgrading from internal soundcard on my nForce 590 SLI board to pico Dac was a night and day difference. I don't know much about DAC chips but diyaudio list shows your DCD-590 uses PCM61. The datasheet is here http://datasheet.digchip.com/694/694-4-005819-PCM61.pdf ..maybe one of the other hfiers can understand its capabilties and tell if you purchasing a DAC is worth it.

My advice would be to take advantage of 30-day return policies and try out what you can. That method should beat any amount of reading. It does burn some cash for shipping back and forth but in the end may prove worth it. So far I've only tried the GLite. LittleDot MKV, HeadRoom Micro Amp are still in shipping.

I have no experience with the amp. But I just got an used Ultra micro DAC from a head-fier here, and it's worth every cent I paid for. If you are buying it new, take advantage of the return policy. Give it a try, return it if you don't like it.

I own the ultra micro stack for the past year, and I would say you will love them. The Dac is sooo much better than any sound card. In fact, that is how I use it with computer and uncompress files. If you can find it on the for sale forum, it will be the best deal out there.

go for it! excellent stack... what headphones are you gonna use it with?
I am using mine with the denon ahd-5000 and it is so good that I can believe my ears every time I hear it. but it is great with every headphone i throw at it.

in general headroom sound is very accurate and balanced sounding, with a alot of power thanks to the class a fine electronics. get the cardas 6" mini to mini interconnect if you go for the stack.

I have an Ultra Micro Stack myself and can attest to their very high quality sound output. You will not be disappointed with the sound from that pair.

There are 2 used Ultra micro stacks for sale right now here on head-fi. I also agree with Jalo.

I have had mine for only a few days but I like the sound very much.

Not a review:.. but the micro stack has, everything right! The bass is solid, and tight and with the right headphone can go pretty darn low. I was amazed!

Mids are a little dry, just a little but this coming from a tube guy, so you should keep that in mind.

Highs are nice, cymbals shimmer with a nice natural decay. The highs are not at all harsh, even with the Grado HF-2 I have on loan here. (I say that because I have a problem with the Grado highs hurting my ears after a while with my Singlepower amp. and my Cary amp.)

I have read that some here are complaining with there sensitive headphones like Sure 530 that there is a slight hiss when there is no music playing, with my 51 year old ears the noise floor is plenty black.

I like the DAC. I have tried the USB from my PC, sounds great, there maybe a little more detail from my optical out on my Blue ray disk player.

I was going to hook my Meridian GO-8 up just o compair the DAC to something else that I know, and like, just to see the difference (I can post my early impressions here later if that would help, but to tell you the truth I don't expect there to be that much different than the Meridian and that's a $4000.00 source)

And they are smaller than you might think! I also think, they are Very nice looking stacked on the table beside my bed.

I like mine. Good luck.

I'm especially in agreement here. The Ultra MicroStack does a great job of taming the high frequency response of the SR325is. If I listen to those cans straight from the computer or iPod, the base response becomes anaemic, there's less space and the highs are too much with a hissy quality. When plugged in the Ultra Micro Stack, it's a different story. The difference is quite dramatic. It's not that pronounced with the RS2i, but the improvement is also there.

There are indeed some for sale on here

But yeah the uDAC is great. Really nice smooth sound.
You have to see the size to believe it; it's tiny.
The psu is gigantic by comparison.
