DIY Sennheiser HD800 balanced cable

Since most aftermarket cables seems to be copper, I'm going to use cryo-treated UPOCC copper, too. Initial idea is to use HD800 connectors probably from APureSound and Neutrik 4-pin XLR.

Wire choices:
Double Helix Wire 24AWG $2.50/ft. (Double Helix Cables - Continuous-cast UPOCC copper)
CryoParts TWcu 24.5AWG $5.80/ft. (CryoParts Copper Hook Up Wire)
Jena Labs Ultrawire 22AWG $5.00/ft.(Ultrawire)

What other wire options do I have and what wire would you use?

Instead of Litz braid, I was thinking about twisting both channels separately, wrapping them around with Teflon tape and then doing another twisted pair for better channel separation and then finally add nylon multifilament on top.

What do you guys think about this construction?

It's a good practice to twist separate channels and run them in parallel.

The Jena wire is famous, and I mean really famous, for adding body and bottom end. Something that can be preferable to the HD800. For that same reason it won't work if you're looking for a neutral wire.

The ones you listed are basically the UPOCCC standed wire options...

I'd love it if having 3-pin and 4-pin headphone outs like on the woo22 became a dual standard.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Stupid should never be "standard."

This is what must happen to dual 3 pin.

Even with headphone cables? Seems a bit aquard to me.

Cover with nylon multifilament sleeving and it's all good.

Hmm, you might be dead on right. Have you made any cable with that kind of structure? How does it affect the cable vs. twisted channels? I mean the handling of the cable. Does it twist/feel different/aquard since it would be pretty flat vs. twisted variation.

Fairly thin wire inside of 3/16" sleeving, feels nice.

Thanks. I have lots of different size nylon multifilament at home, so I can prototype before "final" cable. I'll try your version first

Does anyone have any opinion about the wire? Should I just go with Double Helix Wire, since it's the cheapest, or is there any difference?

Using the Jena22awg wire requires you to modify the stock strain relief, IE, cutting away most of it. It's the most difficult option. The cryoparts and DHC wire are roughly the same size and do fit the stock strain relief.

Jena all the way

I had  heard the stock cable had  a circa 1 ohm resistance, I've actually measured this myself now. Quite surprising considering Sennheiser are using silver plated copper.

How did you measure the resistance of the cable?

Some DMMs might not be accurate enough to measure <1ohm.
