Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

I like to wear an aluminum foil helmet with my T50's so the aliens can't intercept my thoughts

I'm pretty sure it does help, the increase in clarity and detail was quite noticeable, might be the cotton though, hard to say.

sounds like high freqs---reflective material.
Also sounds like something I should have done when w/ stock pads haha. 840 pads came earlier than I expected so never went through the reflex dot yet.

The helmet connects to one of the ground wires in your T50, right?  Otherwise, it is pointless.

Finally put some aluminum on the baffles filled with clay, increased detail and clarity by small margin, almost unnoticeable. But I still have the infamous 7000Hz peak.

EDIT: Forgot what I said early about increasing detail by a small margin, they're starting to sound analytic

Why not just use Dynamat for that? I think it's more efficient, also it's thinner and you can stick absorber foam on it. Or even use two layers and then foam. Without the foam you can't really be sure it's real improvement and not exaggerated treble due to increased reflection. Though, I guess, for highs plasticine is not much less reflective than aluminium, so what you hear is most likely true improvement.

Still, I vote for Dynamat with foam. That's what I'm gonna do when I open them again.

I probably have enough interest to do small orders locally for the straight and angled baffles.  I still need to verify the design because the print shop couldn't' get it done before the weekend, so things will have to wait until Monday to keep rolling.  Once I'm satisfied with the design, I will start crunching some real numbers about the price to get you a final cost that you can Paypal to me.

Got an idea on these peaks after hearing clear improvements from putting biplast foam on earpad inner surfaces and center driver square.

I suppose the peaks are caused by reflections between headphone's earside surface and pinna. So we have to absorb them. Obviously we have no control on pinna, but Fostex's driver with its little open area allows us to cover it. Cut out cubes or thin stripes of absorbing foam and cover everything other than the actual openings in the driver. It would be better if one would remove the driver from baffle and stick the foam right on metal plates, bit I suppose placing the foam above dust cover would also work. And perhaps combining that would be even better.

Haven't yet tested that as cutting many small cubes/stripes would take some time, but will give it a try at weekends.

This is why I added the paxmate foam to the ear side of the baffle in the rastapants.  Improved imaging quite a bit, too.

My fear with adding foam to the ear side of the baffle would be having an even more difficult time getting the 840 pads on. Are these fears unfounded? :xf_eek:

Yes, your fears are unfounded. I have both original (no foil) dynamat and a layer of Paxmate on mine and I can still get the 840 pads on, and they stay on.

Yes, but the wire from the helmet to the ground wire of the T50 must be of 8 gauge wire, or it will not work correctly.

Well I certainly can't divulge my foil helmet grounding secrets here, they have internet access too you know!

The wire on your helmet grounds to the mirror on the back of your head.

I thinking of using dynamat on the baffles, then felt above it, instead of acoustic foam, might work.
BTW, has anyone tried Compass Audio when buying the T50rp's, they have a 4.5 star seller rating and they offer the T50rp's for only 74$
Edit: My T50rp's are starting to sound a lot like HD650's, with good treble. I wonder if Fostex ever thought their cheap ortho's could turn out so good

I'm using Dynamat on the baffles (with square areas cut out for the drivers) and then heavier felt bonded to the Dynamat.  The Shure 840 pads are then adhered in place via slipping them on as you normally would.  Several hundred posts back, it was mentioned that since the ortho driver is bi-polar (I believe that was the term used), it can benefit by having dampening material on both sides of the baffle.

I haven't tried Compass Audio before.  However, just a few weeks ago B&H Photo had them for the same price, with free UPS Ground shipping.

yes I ordered mine from full compass, they were helpful and courteous, the price was indeed $74, until mine were back ordered and then sent via ups and I had to pay their freaking brokerage fee of $35.00.
