Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW! - Page 308

mmayer167, what O2 gain setting is ideal for the t50? As I recall, the stock build can switch between 2.5 (low) and 6.5 (high). Thx.

Edit:  Update on my mod situation since i got the O2.  If any of you get this amp get it for tuning the t50. It let me hear huge differences between tweaks. But beyond that it is really wonderful just to listen to.

So my setup is as follows: try if you want, its what i have the most fun listening to.

-modeling clay baffle, flush with top of driver and tapers to nothing at rim. yea i know its alot...

-stock felt front and back of driver no reflex dot

-stock bass port felt

-paxmate in back of cup, not on the center screw post though.

-square of 2mm floppy craft felt the size of driver behind driver. Each corner of the felt square touches the posts in the cup that the driver sits on when you put the cups back together.

-3 of 4 bass slits covered with electrical tape on the outside of the cup.

-O2 pads

A few days ago I posted about my new TP50's, and said I had a distortion problem

Turns out it was my tube amp, when I tried my other amp (really my source and a burson buffer), it sounded fine.

Then, I swapped left and right output tubes in my tube amp, and the noise disappeared.

The weird thing to me was that I didn't hear any of this noise/distortion with my AKG-501's, but it was easy to hear with the TP50's.

BTW, I just read a short Steve Gurrenberg article about Can Jam, and was somewhat surprised that he mentioned the TP50's in it, in the rest of the article he was talking about megabuck cans.

No reply on the re-cabled T50rp experience????  I'm not sure if an ortho driver would take advantage of a better cable?? Look like I'll have to take the plunge for the team . As far as exchanging the cup to have two cup without the cable connector on one headphone and someone else could ended up with two connectors for balance sound interesting but might be costly with the shipping???

there are a good number of people who have done recables for the t50rp, it was a bit of a fad because they hated the connector box (cant blame them), most did not report any difference in sound, they just liked having a better quality cable. A few did note some difference, but nothing mindblowing. I think it might be worth it just to get rid of the box in the left earcup, but dont expect too much of a difference in sound.

Awesome on the O2! I wast thinking of selling my NFB 12, getting a better dedicated DAC and buying the O2. Idk, I like the power, price, and detail of what I have so I wonder if it would be worth it.

If anything an ortho would take more advantage of a recable than most dynamics because they can be more revealing (depending on damping scheme and which ortho)  But IME cables aren't black and white improvements, they just change the tonal flavor.  So with the T50rp the mods inside are going to have a much bigger affect than whatever change the cable makes.  I'd say it's a last tweak if you're really happy with everything else.  IMO of course.

Hows this? Recabled with 26awg silver plated copper. Dual entry eliminating all of the problematic stock connections.

So far the connector box didn't cause me any trouble and I fine the stock cable simple but functional. Regarding the O2 I have two to build but do not know when  I'll be doing them them. I've got the boards and have not ordered the parts yet and waiting for my front plate.

Thanks for the information on the ortho. I think I would like a bit more treble clarity but I'm still playing with the mod so I'll take your recommendation and wait at the end  for the final touch. Maybe a silver cable would help. Will see.

Very nicely done Sharkz. How do they sound with the SPC cable and what is your current configuration/mod's on the T50rp? also did you completely remove the internal box and did you drill hole from the bottom of the cups?

The holes are drilled from the bottom. The internal box is technically still there although it isn't doing anything. I removed all the stock wiring.

As for the sound, it might be a tad bit brighter, but I don't think the sound has changed that radically. As I have stated before, my main reason for the recable was to remove the annoying static and channel dropping associated with the left connector. This is a lot more comfortable and I think it looks a lot better. The cable is a bit bulky, but it is really flexible for its size. Plus it really doesn't weigh much at all. However, if I had to do it again, I would make it slightly longer I think. The stock 10' or so is too long, however this is just about 6', a tiny bit too short for my liking. Otherwise I am very happy with the $30 it cost.

Wow, that's pretty weird (about the resonance). Especially given you've heard it even without cups. Only thing I can think up is that paxmate reduced damping of the driver by virtual expansion of cup volume, and some undamped resonance manifested at 1khz exactly. Maybe. If I'm right, adding something more sonically resistive/absorbtive to paxmate and also correcting driver damping is necessary. Or maybe it's due to interaction with baffle vents.

So has anyone found a similar material to the white felt on the back of the driver? 

I know BMF has found that about 1.5 to 2 layers of Transpore has a similar sound, but anything of similar consistency? 

I think I saw LFF and someone else suggest dryer sheets, and rhythmdevils suggested coffee filters. Is there anything else I'm missing? I tossed my stock felt a long time ago, so I don't quite remember what they felt like.
