Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW! - Page 208

Lol, E7 for the T50rp.  Very funny.

I tried telling people that awhile back on other threads.  Someone said the Shure 840 was better. Threw my hands up in the air.

 

Just throwing my two cents in. I did notice after a few minutes with the micropore (gentle paper tape) that the low mids were incredibly recessed. However, with the transpore (clear) tape, the low mids seemed too thick and muddy to me. Right now I have one layer of each over the drivers (with the stock white center square), and using stiff craft felt over the vents, these are sounding more balanced to me now.

These are just very early impressions though. I'll update as I listen more.

I really hate Head-Fi now.  They convinced me to buy HD650's and put nice silver cable on them, only to lead me to modify a pair of $74 Fostex T50RP's that blow my HD650's out of the water.

 

 

Sounds about as exciting as watching Pearl Harbor w/o the combat scenes.

 

Hey, I went through a number of headphones as well and in the end, a $74 headphone beats the crap out of everything I have ever heard except for the Stax 009.

Yeah, my HD650 with Silverdragon V3 cable sounds like a childs toy compared to this.  Its stupid to even try and compare.  I'm not quite sure whether to feel swindled or elated?

Good thing that you got T50rp for 75$ and bad thing HD650 was your past favourite as i can see in your avatar and it cost more than $500 with the Silverdragon cable. You guys make me really want to try this sleeping monster but it's out of stock everywhere :(

It's HeadFi's best kept secret.  Despite a couple of (fairly mammoth) threads going about it (and orthos in general), I feel the T50RP is still being slept on.  For the sake of many competing headphone manufacturers w/ much more expensive lineups, I can safely assume they'd like to keep it that way.

 

One thing is for sure, when you do get the T50RP modded and are able to hear what's it's truly capable of, it's helluva lot easier to get rid of one's other cans.  There's a definite adjustment period going back to many dynamic driver & BA phones.. music simply isn't as immersive or "real" like it is with the T50RP.  And that isn't just HF forum-speak.. I think it's quite noticeable.

 

My T50RP's are going to be Paradox'd by LFF, then it's onto finding a matching, desktop amp.

 

BTW, I'm listening to Kevin Yost's deep house classic, "One Starry Night" as I type this.. it's an album that's sent shivers down my spine with it's atmospheric and skillful production.. but I had to grab a coat when I pumped them through the T50RP.  With my brighter flavored T50RPs, the hypnotic cymbal work sounds so crisp and detailed, it's like I can cut glass with it... yet it isn't fatiguing.

 

Simply magnificent.
