underrating a part's spec would not be falsifying... it's just being conservative ... overrating, otoh, ...

No there are not OVAL. They are a perfect circle. Note the v.1 in my description of my T40's (version 1, not RP v.2). They fit and still sound nice enough 8^).

D'oh!

Would eggshell mattress foam material cut to proper size be suitable?  I have a bunch of that handy and wouldn't mind using it. I'm just trying to make do with what I have at home as much as possible.

Dynamat can only really be found at automotive stereo stores, Paxmate is a computer damping foam, and most of the other stuff is found at a fabric store.  You probably have minimum 3-4 stops (for glue, etc. as well).

It might, but my experience with foam is that anything other than actual acoustic foam either: does almost nothing, or does waaaaay too much.  I had a six month period where I tried literally dozens of materials that I had on hand--none of them worked as well as materials that are designed for their acoustic properties.  Except felt, which is awesome and cheap and easy to find.  Go felt!

My guess is that mattress foam will be too dense, and will probably muffle the sound too much or even cause ugly reflections.

Seriously, a quick trip to a fabric store can get you a long way towards being fully stocked.

K, sweet. Might try and fit the 840 pads to round wood cup. What size in diameter are the cups on the T40's? I will make the woodies to that size.

Hey Now,

I measured the cups and they appear to be approximately 4" across to the outer most edge, maybe 3 15/16ths to the inner edge 8^). The SRH840 pads fit loosely on my T40v.1 cups. Easy to take on and off and spin around, not tight at all. They make a nice seal and are shaped more like ears 8^).

Hmm, that is interesting about the drivers being the same now. Both the T40 and T20 I got a while back had the cheaper made white drivers and were definitely a notch down in SQ from the 50 which I why I never used them. I wonder if they cut the original T40 Driver from the line and silently upgraded the T40 or even whether it's a temporary or permanent change. I'll have to get one and see.

I wouldn't use the egg trays cardboard things ... they age and rot.

now that my fostexs have been modded, they are getting used a lot close to bedtime.. Kind of my more laid back than my grado, which is welcome close to bedtime, I guess. Although.. who knows what would happen if I took that driver cloth off. I think it would probably make them better, but I don't think they will directly compete with my grados simply because they are closed, so I think I'm going to leave them how they are. 

Does anyone know how much the Shure SRH840 pads typically cost and where's the cheapest way to buy them?

I got through another 20 pages of the thread  last night. There was a lot of really good info and thought provoking stuff between page 90 and 110. Hopefully I can work my way through the rest of it in the next couple of days. I'm sort of reluctant to remove that felt on the inside driver back though. I liked your Rastapants plasticine config btw. I'm assuming your other suggestion on the earside of the baffle is this:

So if I understand how you have yours most of the driver is exposed on the earside of the baffle?

So when your listening there is nothing between your ear and the driver?

So did you cut out that entire square and box the driver squares with paxmate too; or did you just cut our individual squares leaving the original felt?
