In his incremental mods thread, BMF found that six of his cotton balls weighed 1.6 g total. In reproducing his mod, I found that three of my cotton balls weighed about 1.6-1.8 g. I think the range of per-ball weight was about 0.5 g to 0.7 g, bearing in mind that my scale is pretty finicky down at those low weights.  So, you can see the range is large between manufacturers and even between bags of the same product.

Perfect so around 1.6g per cup is the sweet spot? Ill do that thx for the info

This might be of interest in getting the cups to be better matched. It seems that each cup is not always as well matched as they could be:

^ This is where a "personalized" measurement kit and digital scales comes in handy.

Sorry, my mistake. He actually said 1.8 g per cup = 6 balls. (You can visit the first post in the incremental mod thread and search on the phrase "March 15, 2013" and you'll be transported to the exact section of the post that makes reference to his use of cotton balls.)

Listening to mine some more right now. They respond well to EQ. Giving them a +2db treble boost from my E17 right now and they kind of sound like my Q701 a little bit. Obviously not really the same, but closer. The added treble actually seems to help soundstage and imaging as well. The added treble also helps them to be enjoyable at a slightly lower volume, while with no EQ they only sound good to me at a higher volume.

I encourage everyone to try pad stacking just because it's so easy to do and really changes the sound in a fun way.  If you have a decent amp, this method can really add a beautiful soundstage while keeping the "liquid mids" that well all have come to love from this driver.  I don't think pad stacking is a permanent solution, just a fun idea to try out.

You can search this thread for "stacked" or "srh1440" or srh1840" to find more information on the above topics.

Thank for the advice, I've tried many "stacks" and lifting, but for the moment I'm just gaining a larger soundstage while I'm losing something in Sq and spl, so, for the moment I've made a step back.

The plug isn't right-angled but it fits...I have another monoprice cable with that same 3.5mm end and it fit perfectly, so I ordered it last night. I was going to get a V-MODA cable, but this was 10 bucks cheaper and monoprice has a lifetime warranty on their cables.

It does look a little silly having the plug/cord stick an inch to the side but I just wear these at my desktop, so nobody will be laughing at me.

In case anyone was wondering what the cable looks like...

Man, I really can't decide which I like better, my modded T50rp or my Q701. I like both, but for different reasons. I guess it's a good thing though. No reason that having 2 good sounding headphones would be a problem. L3000.gif

These sure are nice for prog rock and metal. So quick, but natural sounding.

Just ordered the HM5 pads. The Shure pads are just too uncomfortable for my ears.

What do people find uncomfortable about the shure pads?
It's probably the depth of it. Personally, I find it a bit too shallow, but raising it a bit with cotton helps. But then that changed how it seals around my ears to be more problematic. Ended up using a beyer gel pads.

My ears are just massive. I've been using two 840 pads on top of each others and my ears still touch the inner wall.

Well, you shouldn't have come here; you should have stayed on Vulcan. Or else brought your Vulcan headphones with you. biggrin.gif
