Can someone vouch for Subtle for me?

*Update* Had a call from Subtle today; looks like his cell phone was mia for a while -- will be sending payment.

Hi guys, I know that Subtle is a long-standing member here at Head-Fi, I just wanted to get this out of my system before I send him a huge check:

I'm planning to purchase his HP-2's for sale and we have agreed on a price; please note this took about 3 weeks to do, I would write back right away and hear back about a week later between messages.

I'd like to send him a check so as to not take a huge hit via paypal fees; the address he provided me is a PO Box.

I have his phone number and have called but he has yet to answer or return my calls.

Again, Ryan's a really nice guy; long time head-fi-er -- I really shouldn't be concerned... He mentioned a friend of his has to have been hospitalized and therefore he has been frequently unavailable; which I can understand.

Before I send this big check out; can anyone put my mind at ease to assure me I'm not walking into a bad situation?

Thanks!

I know this is not what you want to hear but I would be extremely cautious with a seller who is so... unavailable.

Which would appear to be why he was asking in a public forum in the first place.

He may not have feedback here but does he have any on ebay or amazon? Seems like quite a few people who sell here also sell there as well. Maybe he, or someone else, can direct you to feedback on other sites?

Perhaps you two could ask an intermediate person trusted by both to receive both items (payment and headphone), and you could pay by the kind of check where the money is already out of the bank account? That way the intermediate seller could perhaps verify the headphones are received, and working, and that the money is out of your account.

While I appreciate your concerns, if I were subtle, I would back out of the sale and look elsewhere for someone to purchase the headphones. I think to publically question whether or not he's a crook is wrong.

If the transaction feels wrong to you, then don't do it.

And please, don't ask for an intermediary to make this purchase. That just seems so tacky. "I don't trust you and I think you're gonna steal my money so why don't we do this..."

That's an F-off waiting to happen.

Agreed. But look at the circumstances.

I'm not asking your validation on the purchase. I'm asking if anyone knows him a little better than me. My post in no way is intended as a means to harm his character.

This is why I don't mind paying PayPal's fee on large purchases and always use a credit card, as well. Yes, there is a fee, but you're protected.

I looked at the circumstances, as described by you. That's why I said if it doesn't feel right, then don't do it.

I can understand that you're not intending to harm his character; however, by opening up someone's integrity to the general forum, it's possible that someone who's had a deal go wrong could come out and slam subtle for it. Is this likely? I don't know. Is it possible? Of course. In which case unless he (subtle) came to present his side of what might have happened, his character could, in fact, be harmed.

That's all I'm saying.

Maybe you should just suck it up and do Paypal or something like UE suggested. The extra cost would bite, but at least you'd probably have some protection in case something went wrong.
