Vintage Pioneer appreciation thread - Page 3

Question: whatever happened to Pioneer re headphones? Did they lose interest? Seems to me given the quality of their product in the 70s they could have been a real player had they continued development. I had my SE-L40s for 5 years and despite being an audiophile even then never felt a need to upgrade.

i have liked them much. they were up for sale but i changed my mind and am keeping them. i find them to be almost too large tho. very lively and huge soundstage for gaming!

Absolutely!! I remember there were times while playing fps games when I felt really sorry for my enemies .. Not only can you hear everything it is to be heard, but you hear it in a way you enjoy it!

... not that my posts belong here but you don't see fellow se-a1000 owners too often .. :P

Hey I still have my SE-L40s! So I did what you suggest ... tried them A/B vs my Senn HD600s (don't have 650s).

You're right -- no comparison. Senn wins hand down. (Used an EF-1 with an RCA Clear Top, Sony CDP, moodlab DAC).

But the Pioneer's look so sharp.

is it sacrilegious to recable any of these?

I picked up the LE20 as a foster phone for some early ortho tweaking, but recently put them back to original and have left them for the kids to listen to.

No, some of them require a new cable because of corrosion. I need to recable my SE-700. I love the look of the old cable, but it's corroded.

would any of you regret spending $25 on a LNIB pair of SE-2's?

i have a Monitor 10, SE500, SE700 & L40. Only the Monitor 10 gets any kind of use these days.
I used to be a huge fan of Pioneer kit generally and I still very much lust after a good Pioneer M-22 but whenever I see them they're a bit beat up and overpriced.

what about converting to dual-entry? i really don't give 2 shts about resale value ..i plan on passing this sort of stuff to my kids. I just don't want to anger the gods of vintage electronics.

reasons: i like the look and feel of dual-entry; i like to replace all of the wiring, at this age especially; less circuit hassle ..just a quick and easy solder job.

they're my cans i can do what i want ..blah blah ..but at this level of vintage, there's a certain sense of esteem that I'm cautious about disrupting.

I doubt if I'll change them to dual entry. I don't want to try to cut a hole in the cup.

received the cans. they're "meh" ..not impressive, but certainly not horrible to listen to either. they should be decent "throw in the backpack" headphones once I throw a smaller plug on them.
