chicago/skokie area head-fiers -- help with cable/internet etc

in preparation for a move to my first house, I am trying to figure out what service to use for tv, internet, and phone. currently in chicago, I have off-air hd thru a rooftop antenna, no cable or directv, and dsl/phone thru AT&T.

The new home is in skokie, and I am wondering if I should just do the comcast triple-play, and be done with it, or if there are better options in terms of price and/or service. I currently have a tivo hd dvr, with an add-on hard drive, which I like very much; if i went cable, i'd probably do cable cards, so if possible, factor that into your recommendation.

Thanks for reading and replying.

I have Comcast. I feel it is the best in terms of programming and internet service of the cable providers. RCN was cheaper but the technical support was the worst in the world. Comcast has better techs but the customer service/billing is a joke. I think WOW is available in some areas but I haven't tried it. I've heard Verizon FIOS is the best but I have never used it and it hasn't been available anywhere I've lived at.

I have no experience with cable cards unfortunately. Hooking up straight to the wall w/ an HDTV with a QAM tuner will get you the local channels in HD along with most (all?) of the basic channels. I use the Comcast supplied HD-DVR (new flashy one with blue led and white numbers) for my 42" plasma, the new very slim HD box for my 19" LCD in the office, and the old school huge std. box for the old CRT in the bedroom. The new HD-DVR has great PQ and response, the new slim HD box has poor HD quality (or it could just be the TV?), and the old standard box has the best picture quality and response of all the standard boxes, much better than the new slim boxes.

With internet, phone, cable (with the digital preferred plus package or whatever it's called) plus equipment my bill is ~$110/mo. but yours may be higher or lower because I had some issues with billing.

P.S. Welcome to the area! Where are you moving from?
