MP3 File deterioration

I've heard claims that mp3 files deteriorate over time due to the lossy compression or something like that. has anyone else heard of this before?
seems pretty far-fetched to me

erase the spaces!

They fade away and the dust gets under your fingernails. The first sign is when the sound gets fluffy and then bits go missing. One cough and it all gets blown away.....
