HTC Hero, experiences?

My current Motorola rzr v3 is starting to act awkward.
In the Netherlands we are fortunate to pick a new phone when we extend our subscription(once every 2 years, in general).

Is there anyone how has tried the HTC Hero? Being kind of a "phone purist" this is the first smartphone that really got my attention. The fancy stuff always seemed to be prone to failure to me.

If anyone could share his experience with this phone, it would be great.

I've been totally unimpressed by HTC phones...my brother in-law has had several, and I currently have a Touch Pro 2.

I'm unimpressed by their WinMo offerings, but the Android ones... Much better!

The Hero seems like a huge improvement on the G1, and G2/Magic with the new interface. The latest ROM (will come officially soon) improves it alot, takes away almost all lag!

Battery life IIRC is about 1.5 days of heavy use... Not sure. I found the build quality to be very good personally. TONS of free apps in the market place. Very good keyboard for an on screen one. Web browser is very good. The screens thing is great I think, love the little toggle switches you can add for wi-fi, bluetooth, airplane mode etc. - camera isn't so great though, compared to the N97, by all accounts, but I think everything else blows the N97 out of the water.

I used to like Symbian, preferred it over Android on the G1, and WinMo skins HTC did, that just over complicated things, like flicking pictures up and down! Now you just swipe side to side with the Hero when viewing pictures...anyway, the new UI for Android rocks IMO, looks sleeker than Symbian, seems far more reliable, and is so much faster! I was going to go for an N97, and use it for music too, but I have too much, and I like to carry it all, so even an iPhone wouldn't be perfect, especially no expandability, and now i've decided on the Hero, only thing holding me back was the lack of storage, but with an 8gb MicroSD, i'm sure i'll be fine, and i'll just carry my iPod too.

I'll be getting one soon

For now, head to Youtube, search for HTC Hero Review, and sort the videos by their rating to get the ones with the most stars at the top. Some of the 3/4 part reviews are a good 25mins long in total, but worth it to see it all in action, and get a good gist of the phone. Seriously helpful, and gives you the details you asked for in your above post.

Well, the battery last about 1-2 days, depends on how much you use it. turning off 3G can extend the battery life.
It can be slow sometimes if you have opened too many programs (you can turn them off with taskiller)
The build quality is okay, I have not experienced anything negative with that aspect.
And it is very user friendly, you can easily sort your programs and you have 7 tabs where you can put your stuff.
The Android market contains a lot of free programs you can download, but finding programs isn't very easy, however there is a internet site wich has all the apps on it so you can easily find apps you need and search for it in the market
AndroLib, Find all applications and games available in the Android Market for your Android Phone, HTC Dream, HTC Magic etc...

I decided to go for it. Picked it up this afternoon. Havent spend much time with it so far but i do like it! Posting this with from it. Typing is still a bit odd but im sure i will get used to it. Was expecting a struggle because my hands are thicker than average. The trackball works very good too.
1,5 day on a battery seems pretty good for a smartphone.

So far i'm very happy with it. I'm already pretty familiar with the sense interface and screens. And the teflon coating is verry nice, feels great and smooth.
Only when making a phone call the line is terrible, i can barely hear them. Like having almost no connection, only they can hear me flawlessly. It does not matter if i'm calling or am being called.
Going back to the business center tomorrow and see what they say. They told me if i'm having technical issues in the first 8 days, i will get a new phone instantly.
Not realy a great intro into smart phones but if its only in this one phone im not complaining when its solved.

Thought i'd update it a bit.
I got a new phone almost straight away after telling the the issue.
First battery live was not more than 3/4 of a day. Now with several full discharge/charge cycles and fidling with the settings, turning off things that i do not need when not in use and services that are polling servers constantly. It is now at 20-25% battery running for almost 3 days with normal phone use(sms, calling and not too much internet useage)
