Amsterdam (no drug content)

Can we discuss the city of Amsterdam without drugs? The reason why is because I visited Amsterdam last year for a couple days and I loved it. It's a beautiful city and so lovely and charming. The hot chocolate milk was amazing and the best French fries I've ever had was in Amsterdam. I loved the streets and houses too. It really impressed me alot.

The last time Amsterdam was on this board, a moderator closed the thread because drugs were discussed and I understand because we have posters here that are under 18. If a moderator wants to close this thread, feel free. I understand. But I would like to hear other people's experiences of Amsterdam that are not drug and sex related because the city itself is unique, friendly and wonderful in ways other cities are not. I loved Amsterdam.

It's a place I really want to visit someday. The historical richness of the city is enough that the "drug friendliness" is a non-issue for me. I'd love to see the canals and the Rijksmuseum. In fact, i'd love to just go to a northern European city. And Amsterdam really strikes me as a the quintessential northern European city (if such a thing can be said). What's more, it seems like a pretty cool place to visit by one's self, which is how I like to travel.

Amsterdam really strikes me as a city with a lot to offer, and I would love to visit someday, along with nearby countries like Austria and Germany.

The Netherlands and Austria are not exactly close. The distance between Amsterdam and Vienna is like DC and Chicago. If you go, don't make the mistake of trying to do too much.

The Netherlands is on our list of places to go. Unfortunately, it's a very long list.

Amsterdam looks like a beautiful place, with all its canals and narrow streets.
I have never had the pleasure to visit it myself. But I would love to go there some day, and it is certainly on my list. Head-Fi meeting maybe?

I found it a very crowded and noisy city. Did not really like it.

The history of Amsterdam is cool though. It basically starts with the fall of Antwerp in 1585. Ever since then Amsterdam was becoming the major player for trading routes.
With the city growing it also attracted foreign people. People in Holland (no, not the Netherlands) were very easy with them. Regardless of what faith, what colour of skin or whatever people were welcome in the growing city. And sorry to start about drugs, but they too fit in the welcomeness of Amsterdam.

However, that 'welcomeness' can also be taken as ignorant to other people.

I lived in Amsterdam for a while, and loved it.
The old canals and houses gives this city something special....

I love the old, historical Amsterdam. Not too sure about the modern city, as all my time was in the area most typically referred to as "Amsterdam".

I went a few times during the summer and, renting a bicycle, riding around, checking out the museums, the sights, scenery, was an amazing experience. I'm heavily into vinyl and there happened to be about a half dozen decent shops, so I checked them out, as well (and purchased way more than I should have).

I liked how the city's broken down into different sections: Restaurants, clothes shops, etcetera. I also remember checking out the "Red Light District" (is it still there?) and walking around sort of feeling sad for the window candy, as they were looked on like animals in a zoo. All the tourists (old, young, in-between) all walking around and gawking at the items for sale just felt a bit depressing.

By my second visit I didn't feel that way at all. Then, it was kind of interesting all all the candy, be they gorgeous and model like or large and rather unattractive (at least to me) cost the same amount. I guess I really shouldn't say "all" as I only checked the prices of a few (just out of curiosity). Seriously, I'm a vinyl hound, remember. That's what I was chasing. Plus, I was thinking, "50 Euros?!?! That's a lot of damn records!"

I really enjoyed Amsterdam. If not for the fact that it would now take me, like, 15 flighttime hours to get there, along with the cost the associated costs versus a 3-hour drive from Germany, I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Only in the summer months, though. I don't think I'd enjoy it as much if the weather was crappy. So if anyone decides to go, do so when the weather is nice. You'll love it.

My family and ancestors have lived here for many centuries (since way before the 1500s).
It´s my home.

I was there in March and the weather was good but during a late afternoon, it was dark, rainy and gloomy and some parts of the city looked mysterious and creepy in an old world Europe kind of way. It kind of reminded me of an old dark fairy tale. I loved it. It was a kind of vibe I've never felt in the U.S.

I would also love to visit, especially with the cheap airfares there are today. But it's a little far down the list at present. I've got to cross the rest of my ancestral homelands off the list (Sweden, England and Austria) before I venture through the rest of Europe. But I will get there in the next few years.

Visited the Netherlands back in the 80's.
Amsterdam was very cool. Had some of the best beer ever there. Found a nice friendly pub with lots of fun people (which unfortunately had the bathroom from Trainspotting in it). Lots of history.
Went to the Ann Frank house. Very moving experience.

Do they eat anything besides fish there?

I heard they have great coffee there.

I went there Dec/Jan last winter it was my port of entry/exit. When on my first time there I wasn't too enthralled with the city it was too crowded and a little dirty, but when I went came through the second time I fell in love the people were fantastic weather was great (compared to Edmonton in January anyway). The chaos and the noise, the canals, and (I can't emphasize this enough) the people were fantastic. My next Europe trip I want to go through there again, then maybe Spain we'll see.
