Closed back choice-HD280 vs K171 vs AH D1001

I have been asked, well told to get some closed backed cans! They will not be used as my main headphones, so I have set myself a budget of £100.

I have a short list of Sennheiser HD280, AKG K171 and Denon AH D1001. I have listened to the HD280s, but there is nowhere for me to audition the other two where I stay.

I found the HD280s to be a nice listen, but in auditioning Sennheisers with my existing Grado SR80s and AKG K702s, I found them to be a bit lacking in detail against the AKGs and dynamic against the Grados. Though I really like my PX200s with my ipod.

So my main questions are; will the HD280s be a worthwhile jump over the PX200s, does the K171 have the same traits as the K702s of comfort and detail and how to the AH D1001s compare?

I have read various threads on the forums and so far the AH D1001s appear to have generated the most interest and approval.

have had all 3

the k171 is supra-aural, very flat/neutral sounding, and hard to drive. more of a serious headphone than a listening one. the denon is much easier to drive, wider range, semi-flat sound, pleasing to listen to. the hd280 i didnt care for in the lest

from what I've read, the D1001 is the clear choice from your list.

this is the ATH-M50 he was talking about.

Search ATH-M50 on ebay for cheaper prices

I would take the D1001 over the M50, but I'm a bit biased, as I own the D1001 and have never tried the M50.

I used to have D1001, found the bass boomy. Now looking for some closed "portable" headphones, having heard and impressed by SRH840, think if M50 got a similar sound or is the SRH840 vastly superior?

Thanks for the responses. I am swinging towards the Denons. They have made the biggest impact on the forum. I have tried the Senns and they were OK. Ourfpshero, your description of the AKGs makes it sound like I would getting someything not too dissimilar to the K702s. Ra97oR, I take your point about bass, but I have been having quite a rock faze at the moment and it would be good to have something that really rocks.

For their price, the Denons are very hard to beat. I am very pleased with mine. If you liked the PX200's out of your ipod, these will blow you away.

Thanks, thats just the sort of comparison I was looking for. I use my K702s for the majority of my listening and I agree with the earlier response about AKGs and serious listening. I use my Grados for when I really want to rock.

But the family have done well to put up with both leaking sound, so time to get closed back cans. This gives me the excuse that 'no I cant just use my PX200s' and I need to get better ones.

I have K701 for serious home use and Proline 750's for closed home use. My other cans are D1001's and HD280's I dislike the sound of the 280's so much I gave them to my daughter. I use the D1001's for my close environment (office space) closed can listening. Much better IMO than the 280's amp'ed or unamp'ed.

I auditioned the Denons and they are off the list. The bass was way OTT and lacked musicality. I listened to the Talking Heads, some Stones and Scissor Sisters and on the latter the bass ridiculous. It sounded like I was a night club where volume is all and people just want to dance with the beat.
