Any single answer of yes or no is not overall to answer your question. for verybody has his experiences and taste. Superb is not a definite word.

You should check to headfi org for the informations on what player is suit for you.

Too much suggestions of recommending you some specify models will make you more confused.

any way, I don't think the sound quality of some Models of Cowon or sony are superb.

"Superb" is pretty definite.

Sony sounds good. But, Cowon is on a much higher league, especially the D2 or the S9. Clean, accurate, and especially POWERFUL. Check the output specs. (26mW+26mW)

Thanks for the reply guys!!! How about beosound 6? Have you guys ever listen to it? I'm quiet curious about its SQ cause of their high price.lol

the Bang and olfsen are basicly recased/rebadged samsung players, which are pretty good but sony and and cowon are somewhat better,

as for the ipod, i can forgive it for being a mediocre player, i can forgive the DRM and the proprietary plug and i can forgive the meh headphone sound quality, but i cant forgive the fact that it inspires other companies to make mediocre players,
i wonder if RIO would still be around, or archos and creative would be making decent players, i even wonder if sonicstage would have existed if itunes never came out creating the lock in software/player system...

well, sorry for the rant, but the only thing worst then being crap, is inspireing others to be crap...

Upgrade your headphone! That makes more sense! The 738 is already a great player, what is your problem with it actually, what are you looking for in the S9 you don't have in the SONY?

These links should help

Cowon S9 Review

Sony X Series X-1000 Review

Sony S540 Review

The B & O is a totally insane option for those with more money than sense, many due to the fact that it's cost out of all proportion for it's poor specification by the standards of either the Cowon or Sony.

Yes it's 4gb re-badged Samsung - Your essentially paying for the name, okay B&O have played with the firmware a little, but it's still doesn't justify the asking price.

The Cowon S9 & the Sony X Series players both offer better specs for half the price, when I auditioned the Beosound 6 at my local store I wasn't exactly blown away by the quality. I did however purchase a pair of B & O Earphones (A8's) for use with my Nano, as I quite liked them - LOL.

The HiFiMAN HM-801 I'm unable to comment on but if you search this forum a couple of people are complaining of SQ issues.
