Upgrade from zero dac/amp

Hello,

I currently own a HD595, a x-fi titanium and a zero dac/amp with upgraded opamps and a hdam module.

I recently looked into the compass dac, and it seems a very nice upgrade, i am particulary interrested in the gain options, because my amp is mostly at 7 - 8 o' clock.

My question is, is the compass the best upgrade for me at around that price, that is 400-500 dollar. (about 350 euro's here in the NL)

thanks.

I just read that it might be better to get better headphones, a Hd650 first, what is the best option, better dac/amp or better headphone?

If you like the sound of the 595s, I'd get 650s. Later down the track you can get better gear for them.

The best way too get a significant upgrade is through better phones. If you get 10,000.00 worth of dacs and amps. the 595s are still going to sound like 595s. They might be the best sounding 595s on the planet, but they won't sound like for example, 650s.

But that doesn't mean a good source and amp isn't needed. Both will unlock the full potential of your cans. But yeah the biggest improvement is always better speakers/headphones. Once you settle on those, you can always upgrade your components later.
