Rockbox: Why is it so much better?

I don't really understand this. I put Rockbox on my ipod 5.5 video (80gb).

As you know, the unit can dual boot so one can do something of a comparison between stock sound and Rockbox sound.

Somehow the Rockbox sound has way less hiss, and better definition.

Now this does not make sense to me. Its the same hardware, after all.

How can this be?

Your hardware is only as good as your firmware allows it to be.

Hardware is the platform however firmware is what tells the hardware how to act & what to do

I have a similar experience from my macbook pro. Even with both software's EQ set flat I much prefer the sound of the same song played through VLC as opposed to iTunes.
