Albums which define a genre

It could be any genre.... as big as Hard Rock or as specific as San Francisco Psychedelic Baroque Pop.

Some albums are just so in tune with what later became a genre

Here is an example:

BAROQUE POP:

WEST COAST GANGSTA RAP:

Cool/Modal Jazz: (Miles Davis - Kind of Blue)

"Classic" Jpop: (Utada Hikaru - First Love)

Ambient: (Brian Eno - Music For Airports)

^ be sure to check out the track 'an ending' from Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks, though.

I know I started this thread so its a little pompous of me to compliment the thread, but I really hope I come off as sincere when I say I'm really enjoying this thread because I'm learning of genres I have never heard of and I'm also learning quick identifications of genres which I knew of but never could put an album to the name......

I never heard of shoegaze before, but I own Loveless....that's very cool, I wiki-ed the genre. Very interesting.

And JPop gets a lot of talk on head-fi, but I never bothered to open the thread, now I can research it a little.

EBM:

A Split Second - Flesh 12"

There are people who will tell you that modern EBM is "different" or "better" and that this is really New Beat or Acid House...however there wouldn't be modern EBM without this track.

A lot of jpop is cheesy or over the top (which I like to an extent), but the older stuff is quite sensible, and First Love is a great sensible album with R&B influence.
It's also recorded well

Hey, it's preference. I haven't had a listen to all game soundtracks, so my choices are rather narrow. If what you said is way better, then I support it.

Nononono. Koji Kondo for the win.

(I secretly agree with Chrono Trigger and FF6, though. Nobuo Uematsu is a genius. Doom... I'm the hugest Doom fan but Bobby Prince was actually handed a stack of Metal CDs and told "copy this".)

Its not that the halo soundtrack isnt good - its great. Its just that not many game soundtracks get yngwie malmsteen (iirc) to play/write them.
Perhaps what I listed would be better considered as 'old' game music, while yours is 'new'.

But still, they represent the growing awesomeness of video game music as a genre.
