Enjoy Porcupine Tree; what else?

I am a big fan of Porcupine Tree and want to know what other bands are of a similar caliber and style. I have looked at the similar artist recommended by iTunes but most all of those fell short. I would like to see some recommendations by fans of PT.

Mars Volta, De-loused album first. Quite different but very good.
Tool, everything really but last three are best IMO. I think 10.000 Days is the most PorcupineTree like album with great musical soundscapes.

and make sure you check the 'side projects':
Blackfield, pretty similar but a bit more radio-friendly?
Opeth, for a bit more heavy stuff, have not listened to it that much but really like 'Ghost Reveries'

Dream Theater
Symphony X
OSI

Riverside
Sieges Even
Sylvan

and of course their copy band Abigail's Ghost (sounds exactly the same)

PTree=King Crimson

As a very long time PTree fan, I cannot fathom why no one has mentioned King Crimson. Their 1973-1994 music clearly had more influence on Steve Wilson than any other single band with the possible exception of Pink Floyd. This has turned into a real partnership between the two bands and their leaders. Fripp has opened up for PTree a number of times, Steve Wilson just remixed the KC catalog to 5.1, Fripp plays on Nil Recurring, Gavin toured with KC in 2008 and so on. A spin off of KC (Stickmen) is opening for PTree on part of their European tour. And so on.

Tool and all the other newer band owe a huge amount to KC. Tool even has a song named after Fripp.

Go get a copy of "Red" and you'll hear instantly what Wilson grew up on. And you'll love it!!

I recommend more Porcupine Tree. Seriously, they have a ton of stuff out there and a lot of their EP's are fantastic as well. I would make sure of grabbing all of those first. The special edition, re-release versions of their older albums have a bonus disc with some of these.

x2 on King Crimson. Obvious selection would be In the Court of Crimson King, Red and maybe Discipline

Yes is another very good recommendation. Fragile, Close to the Edge, and Yes album are good picks

Pink Floyd is the most obvious recommendation.

Some of the modern selections include Riverside as mentioned before. Start with Second Life Syndrome, Out of Myself, Anno Domini HiDef

Fates Warning is another band I can recommend. No Exit, Parallels, A Pleasant Shade of Grey (my personal favourite)

Rush also comes to mind.... Mew, Spock's Beard.... King Crimson, particularly the Wetton-era albums.

I have not heard anything by Porcupine Tree but am a fan of Pink Floyd, King Crimson, etc.

Which PT album should I begin with?

In Absentia is easily the most accessible album from the later phase. You'll probably like Deadwing too. The latest The Incident is an intense albuim and takes a few listens to get into

If you have DVD-A capability don't forget to get the Porcupine Tree DVD-As there are currently 5 releases.

For a glimpse into earlier PT, check out the Stars Die: The Delerium Years 91-97 compilation. After that, you'll want to get into their earlier work (The Sky Moves Sideways, Signify, Up The Downstair)

pretty much the whole of the PT catalog

With all due respect to some of the earlier posters, Muse and TMV are TERRIBLE suggestions a they are in no way, shape or form similar to PT.

I will however concur with those who have recommended some of the more classic recs:

Pink Floyd (DSOTM)
King Crimson (RED)
Rush (Moving Pictures)
Yes (Fragile)

As for more modern material, Festivus is spot on with Oceansize and Pineapple Thief. Oceansize is a seriously talented group of musicians/song-writers.

Truth is, PT is such a tremendous talent that in comparison, alot of the other modern prog might be a bit of a letdown. If you are in the mood to try some artists that are a bit darker/harder, give TOOL, Opeth and even early Dredg a listen.
