Forget the Mona Lisa joke. But though it's not about amps, I thought I'd put forward an obviously related example to make a point.

Sound should not be about looks. However, can you really say that among humans and the inherent complexity of psychoacoustics, that it has nothing to do with it? I'd propose that in the context of the skull candy, it could go both ways in that one may love how they look and thus give what they hear more credit that it's genuinely due. In the same vein, one who thinks skull candy HP's are crap and look awful, will not give what they hear the credit they deserve because of a bias that goes in the opposite direction. This phenomenon isn't restricted to only skull candy or looks. It also relates to the power of suggestion that's inherent in price, prestige, expert opinion etc. etc.

In order to take control of your opinion, you first have to come to terms with how it may be influenced. No?

Aimlink, I agree.

All this debate on Skull Candy is interesting. Being still relatively young, I can understand the allure of SC's over other higher end cans.

Let's face it, being young the concept of flat and accurate sound or the myriad of other descriptors used by audiophiles just don't mean anything. Good sound is bass heavy with slightly exaggerated highs, much like the Beats by Dre. Riding a school bus with using an ipod with downloaded 256k music just won't allow for the critical listening a quiet room and $000's of equipment will offer.

When that age hits where finally accuracy and detail matter then customers will know to check out headphone.com for something better. Maybe a better set of cans or a Bithead to start followed later by a desktop system.

Lets not forget the gift crowd. Who wants to give their kids a hand-me-down like set of headphones as a gift. A pair of HD800s for your child to bring to school? Who are they really for? They will probably appreciate a set of <100 headphones and a new iTouch than some hard to drive Denons.
