Metal with alternating clean and scream vocals?

Thread Starter
So I'm trying to broaden my metal pallet, but I can't find a great deal of metal that I can actually enjoy.
I listen to something like Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan, and I think it's great until the vocals start up. I appear to have an aversion to harsh and overly aggressive vocals - especially when they're constant throughout the song.

I love bands like Opeth and Mastodon, simply because they alternate between screams and clean vocals.

Could anyone here please make some recommendations?

Metal with clean vocals would also be great (ala Tool).

hmmm I don't remember if Dan Swano's Edge of Sanity features that, but I think they do...

Threat Signal - think Linkin Park (singer) meets Lamb of God.
In Flames - newer material has lots of clean vocals. Try "Come Clarity".
Kamelot - All clean vocals, very good singer. Not very heavy.
All that Remains - Newest material has highest ratio of clean vocals. Try "Overcome"
Killswitch Engage - Try "As Daylight Dies"
High on Fire - Stoner metal. Singer sounds like Lemmy from Motorhead.
Amorphis - Newest album "Skyforger" has mainly clean vocals (very good clean vocals) but is also getting soft and almost out of the realm of metal. Try "Silent Waters" for a heavier album.

try Every Time I Die.

when Keith is screaming, he's not really "screaming" but rather singer to a specific pitch. it's hard to explain but it is FAR more enjoyable and easy to listen to than your typical screaming.

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow
Dark Tranquility - Damage Done
In Flames - Colony
Agalloch- The Mantle
The Devin Townsend Band - Accelerated Evolution

Second In Flames, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains.

Also try out Alesana (still rather balanced, bit screamy though), Behind Crimson Eyes, Bullet For My Valentine, maybe some Ill Nino, Machine Head.

Good one. The back and forth between Caleb and Brodsky works great.

Demon Hunter does this alternating fairly well. Any of their 4 albums would do fine.

I third the recommendation for In Flames.

There are plenty of metal bands with clean vocals. I hate overly harsh or grunting vocals and I am not into death, black, thrash or doom metal. I stay in the melodic, symphonic, gothic and progressive genra's.
Some of my favourites are:

Vanishing Point
Kamalot
Within Temptation
Shadow Gallery
Royal Hunt
Primal Fear (some rough/clean vocals)
Nocturnal Rites
Astral Doors etc

Borknagar - Empiricism
Borknagar - Epic

Folkish Blackmetal, vocals constantly varying from clean to screams. Borknagars earlier albums had better clear vocal parts due to better singer, but they are less common and sound is overall more dirtier blackmetal than epic and folkish, so I dunno if you would like them but you might check Quintessence album too anyway.

As already suggested- Agalloch: The Mantle

Then after you hear that album and are hopelessly hooked, check out their other full albums-
Agalloch: Pale Folklore
Agalloch: Ashes Against the Grain

And then of course all their other releases after that.

Try Daylight Dies - Dismantling Devotion. Great CD that alternates between clean and growled vocals. Nice heavy guitar riffs too. If you like Opeth you will like this one.

Amazon.com: Daylight Dies: Dismantling Devotion
