Yet another windows ordeal (I <3 M$) - techie input appreciated

OK, I know head-fi is not the ideal place to post this, but there are a lot of technologically inclined people here. I will probably post a more detailed question on [H]ard if I can't figure this out.

An hour ago, out of the blue (pun intended), I got a BSOD on my year-old Asus 1000H netbook (running preinstalled XP home). Obviously had a slew of things running in the background, as well as Opera, Firefox, uTor, Foobar, etc. Nothing at all out of the ordinary. The bsod now comes up on every boot, including safe mode.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
stop code is 0x0000000A

I'm aware that this is likely to be an IRQ driver conflict, but I haven't modified the hardware on this thing in at least a month. No new software this week, either, except for a Pidgin update. Most likely it is a simple corruption in a driver file, but since that's a grim outcome I've been trying other things. Windows repair cosole is a future step, but not having an internal and/or external optical drive is a severe handicap. Might have to go pick one up.

Things I've tried so far:
1. Tested RAM (with a spare stick): Memory checks out
2. Disabled all unnecessary devices in bios (usb devices, audio, wan, lan)
3. Backed up my primary partition to a desktop drive
4. Made sure my netbook can still run Ubuntu straight off of a flash card. Works perfectly.
5. Ran Seatools S.M.A.R.T scan and short read/write tests on the hard drive
6. Ran windows disk check utility. Drive seems to check out.

Any input appreciated as I'm just picking my own brain for possible solutions and/or steps to a solution at this point.

I used to get "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" a lot. My OS install would often get corrupted, and my HDD eventually died.

A netbook? Does it have solid state memory or a hard drive?

It's got a 160gb hdd in two 80-gig partitions. I probably should've specced it out but i figured model name would be enough ><. Sorry.

Does it make some odd clicking or squeaking noises when it tries to boot?

Lol no, I would've mentioned it. I ran several scans on it, including seagate's own seatools S.M.A.R.T scan (its a 5400.4 momentus). Nothing wrong with the drive from what i can see.

Well, I can't actually boot from that drive. I've got it hooked up to a desktop PC. Any idea where that log is physically located on the drive?

I've seen that caused by over heating memory chips.. thing is the error viewer shows nothing most of the time if its a failing component. How hot does it get in there?

That's very good advice. There are all kinds of things you can do to clean your system and try to fix your registry, but if your laptop is overheating, nothing will work. My very old Compaq simply will not boot if it thinks the proc is too hot.

Well, I'm on the laptop right now, and have been for a few hours, running Ubuntu 9.04 live off a flash drive. It doesn't feel any hotter than I'm used to.
