Hissing problems with new earphones

Thread Starter
I recently got a pair of Klipsch S4s. They work great on my iPod -- but when I plug them into my computer, even with the sound all the way down I get a constant hissing noise (it wouldn't call it loud, but it is noticeable enough that you can still hear over sounds played at a reasonable level).

Based on some googling, it seems the issue is likely my poor sound card (I have a dell inspiron 9300 laptop -- not sure the sound card, but apparently laptop sound cards are normally worse). A similar buzz was also there when I used them on a machine in a computer cluster, but as I said there is no buzz on the iPod. There was also no buzz anywhere from my previous headphones (a pair of cheep koss).

So is the sound card indeed the issue, and if so, how do I go about fixing it?

That is normal, it is usually the noise floor plus some other sounds from EM interference etc... that was not previously revealed by your old headphones due to less sensitivity.

There is one cheap solution at slight cost of SQ, you can get yourself a volume controller or adjustable attenuator such as this one:
Shure - Attachable Volume Control
