I think it very unlikely that for £50 you will get anything to noticeably improve upon the Cowon’s internal amplifier. These units are well known to sound good and don’t need any external amplification.

However, for some three or so years now I have been using a MiniBox E with my Cowon D2 and have found that it improved the dynamics of the Cowon player when used with my Grado SR125s or Senn 650s. The only problem is that the MiniBox is way above your budget.

The MiniBox brings a subtle improvement when listening to acoustic instruments (not processed pop music) in that the sound without it is perfectly fine but with the amp there is a perceptible improvement in dynamics and tangability in that music sounds more like real instruments playing. (This is particularly noticable with my own live recordings.)

It’s difficult to explain why but I suspect that a separate amplifier with its own set of batteries has better control of the headphone diaphragms. It reminds me of listening to a modern high end amp with a stiff PSU compared to say a classic valve amp, in that the modern amp has more ’grunt’ (though of course might lose out to the classic amp in other terms).

In other words, don’t waste your money.

I was in the same position with my d2 fiio e5 and ultrasone hfi 780s bought a caffine ultra for around £50 and it just sounds lush after alot of burn in ,just blows the e5 away. The charging circuit comes in handy ,i just hooked up my keyboard power brick and a rechargable . also 2 gain settings and a bass boost . The bass boost is great as it dosnt add distortion just a sort of rich darker sound , i tend to lower the bass to zero on the cowon and leave boost on.
so yes on paper amping an amp may not work but honestly ive seen friends jaws just drop when they have heard my modest set up

not trying to belittle e5 but i think i shouldve spent the $20 on something else. it does increase the volume a little bit but at the cost of degrade of the sound quality.
i am also in the hunt for a decent amp to use with my cowon d2 and im716.
i am considering ibasso boa d2+, mini3 built by other head-fi'ers, and some cmoys.
please share the info if you find a good amp to go with your d2.

I have used my Cowon D2 with Meier Audio's Corda Move and this combination works fantastically well. The D2 is very well known for its uncolored SQ and powerful output at 26mW per channel and matching it with the very well respected Corda Move made any headphone (including the hard to drive HD650) and IEMs really shine.

I've used an amp only Pico with my Cowon D2.
