vBulletin 4!

So today I saw that vb 4 was announced and it looks like it is going to spot some pretty amazing new features. I know that I am planning on upgrading my boards to vb4 but when I saw the features head-fi really came to mind. This this note I guess the real question is how long after the 4.0 release before head-fi updates?

Also what do you admins think about the new features? I think it will be really cool to see how the new cms system is able to change the way we read articles at head-fi and the new blogging options look very interesting too.

So post up your thoughts on the next vb version and how head-fi may look a few months from now!

This is interesting.

I've just uploaded my 3.8.3 to my host and loading the mods, template hacks. I'm curios of how the 4.0 improves.

I like the idea of CSSing the layout. Makes my life alot easier.

It sure looks to have some nice features. So would be nice to see if/when it makes it way to Head-Fi.org

Hmmmm....

$130 seems a bit steep for a CMS addon. Especially to pay before seeing it. I'm tempted by the lowered price, but not seeing it is a bit hard to swallow.

And this better not mean that they release major point versions more often to get more money. If so, I'm out.

Upgrading a database as large as Head-Fi is no easy task. I don't see any real need for the forums to upgrade, personally. Too much risk of everything breaking.

I do not think the upgrade will be very difficult as it is still just vb and an update should work just like the normal .x updates that have no real risk of losing content.

As for the cost and major version updates. I think that will remain the same becuase when you consider that each version lasts about 5 years the cost per year is actually greater even though the .x updates ate "free". As for the full suit update you are not really spending that much more because even though you can get vb4 "free" on your active license you will not be able to renew when it expires and will then need to buy the entire retail price of just the vb forums. So really if you are a current licence holder and order before the 30th you get the CMS and other features for free and save $60 off what it will cost you when your licence expires. Or if you order after the 30th it will then be $40 more for the CMS and other features of the suit version.

Major version upgrades aren't the same as minor version upgrades by any mean. The upgrade from v2 to v3 was far from painless at several forums I participate in and/or moderate.

Yes however I would pray that the advancements in technology from the v2-3 conversion have yielded significant improvements in the migration to new platforms.

The CSS templates will be a welcome change, as the existing templates are horrific. I don't think what they are charging is at all unreasonable, if it works together better than the mess the blog system was as a separate item. Just about everyone installs VBAdvanced to have a CMS front end as well.
