Should I try the 8's as a replacement for the 9's

I purchased the Sen HD-800 recently and returned them shortly after. I still prefered my Ed 9's but the Sens had a midrange that I long for now. I could never be fully happy with the HD-800 because of the lack of bass and sterile sound. (flame suit engaged) I am wondering if the 8's would fit the bill. From the limited discriptions I've read they seam to have more of a foward mid range and the bass bump does not extend through the entire low range when compared to the 9's. The 8's are also faster.

What would I be giving up in switching from the 9's to the 8's?

What would I be gaining?

I am probably going to purchase the 8's anyway from a vendor that has a return policy. I would not want to do this though if there was a strong possibility I will still prefer my 9's. Even though a portion of my pay check goes directly to the vendor

Any comments or opinions please

You've basically answered your own question. Like really. I have very little to add.

Here's my shoot-out between the two:

Thank you for your insightful review!

I find the 9's well suited for my pin head. I wear them at least 2 hours a day just commuting. So comfort is not an issue with me.

I listen to heavy metal, classic rock and Rap. At times ,I do find the bass bump to be distracting. Thus I think the 8's might work better. I also own the RPX-33

I think I am having a mental battle with myself. If the 8's are better than the 9's, shouldn' t they be called the 10's?

Exactly as discribed.

The bass overhang of the 9's would obscure midrage details. These 8's are very revealing

Both cans have strong bass punch, while 8s on mid bass and 9s on deep bass.

Yes faster response. 8 have less bass which is a good thing, they still have a bit too much, but the 8's are my reference phones for now

No surprise here. The 8's are just more transparent, less "audiophilish".

Yeah, the 8's, FWIR, have more detail and less bass. I still hate the looks of them, except that new one with a different colour to the cup, it's not shiny, I like it. I still prefer the 9's for looks though . I cannot comment about the sound quality as I cannot justify spending that much money on ONE headphone.

Yep the Edition 8 is really a great headphone. There is a TON of bass in these cans but it really does a great job not stepping all over the mids like other cans with great bass do. It's a remarkable feat IMO.

My only complaint so far with these cans is the size of the ear cup. They are billed as a circumaural phone but the cup is quite small. My ears maybe just slightly larger than an average size ear, but they touch the top of the pad. It took some getting used to. I have logged lots of hours on them now so I have become used to it. But I wish the cup was the size of a Denon cup. Perhaps it had to be built smaller to achieve the sound they were looking for. Either way, if that's my only complaint ever with these cans, I'd say I am doing just fine.

Well they are supposed to be portable. For me I have aligned them so if anything it´s my ear snibs that don´t fit. But the leather have adapted so much by now they are 99 % circumaural... Never believed it when I first got them!

I am as newbie as it get with portable audiophilia... Did my virgin run in town with them. Must say it´s a bit awkward running around with 1500$ on your head... I have learned to hate zippers like nothing else and I am always afraid I will bump into some door or something when to deep into the music. They almost isolate to well it´s like you are in a total other world then anyone else. Like afterlife or something.

I am so impressed how they perform straight out of my ipod touch. Pro 900 work surprisingly good too. 435S wasn´t such a surprise that is even more efficient then the ED 8. I am probably getting some yuin PK3 I was recommended for more low profile portable use.

But seriously amazed. I really need to A and B with my home setup to be reminded of that it´s better. The fact I haven´t even attempted to hook it up to my headphone amplifier yet say it all.

Agreed, I actually started singing on the train for a second or two. This has happened a few times with this phone. I have been comuting with hi-end headphones for 10 years and that had never happened before. They work nicely with the Rx amp
